Removal of reference[edit]

Someone has removed the reference to this discography. It was to a discography on Amazon. Can we have an explanation. If a discography can't be referenced by a discography what can it be referenced by? This is not a rhetorical question. --Klein zach 23:10, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The "discographies" on Amazon are not actual discographies. They are just favourites list compiled by an Amazon customer. I have removed this kind of lists before from discography articles, and met with approval from other editors. So I went ahead and removed this one without discussing it on the talk page. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Music (and doubtless many other sources) a discography is "a list of gramophone recordings", so the Amazon clearly qualifies. It may not be a good one, hence you'd be justified in replacing it with someone better. On the other hand simply deleting it is not constructive (and may even lead to the page being deleted). I will restore the reference. I do not have enough time now to replace it with something better. However, a look at Four Last Songs discography (an article I created) and L'Orfeo discography (an article to which I contributed the majority of the references) will give you some idea of what I consider to be proper referencing for discography articles. You can well imagine that referencing discography articles in this way is a time consuming business. I once proposed this ideal referencing model following an AfD discussion on the Fidelio discography, and was assured it was unrealistic and unfeasible. An afterthought on the Oxford Dictionary of Music definition: if a discography is a list of gramophone recordings, we are in big trouble indeed, because this definition excludes all recordings on CD, DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. Leonard Bernstein recording[edit]

Given that the date in the first column seems to be the year the recording was made (not the year it was released), how did Leonard Bernstein manage to conduct a recording with the LSO three years after his death ? 84.192.241.15 (talk) 18:24, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chailly recording does not include the Requiem[edit]

I am deleting the 2001 recording conducted by Ricardo Chailly (Decca #467280-2) (see this edit), since it does not include the Messa da Requiem, but instead has the Messa solenne in E flat, among other early sacred works. Removing non-notable recordings[edit]

I have just removed a large number of non-notable recordings. I think recordings and performances made in non-notable venues such as private churches and university concert halls, entirely by non-notable musicians (non-notable soloists, non-notable conductors, non-notable orchestras, non-notable choruses) whom no one has ever heard of except the non-notable musicians themselves, and recordings which have only ever been published as vinyl LPs, do not belong in a Wikipedia discography. 2011 Grammy Award[edit]

Per Grammy Award for Best Classical Album, a 2011 award was given for Verdi: Requiem (performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Chorus) with: Riccardo Muti, conductor; Duain Wolfe, chorus master; Christopher Alder, producer; David Frost, Tom Lazarus & Christopher Willis, engineers/mixers; Silas Brown, mastering engineer. I imagine it should be on this list. I have no idea where to find it, nor who recorded it or owns it.

Allmusic.com lists it as Verdi: Messa da Requiem, 2010. Super Audio Hybrid CD, CSO Resound 9011008. CD, CSO Resound 9011006. Your credits are confirmed in Allmusic.com. Recorded January 15, 2009 - January 17, 2009, Orchestra Hall Symphony Center.
