SPORTS CIRRICULUM VITAE of Valentin Nikolov issued from Bulgarian Fencing Federation in 1993:


Valentin Nikolov began practicing fencing in 1959 when he was a 12 year old kid.He was training foil until 1964. In 1964 he began training sabre and in 1967 he was in the Bulgarian National Sabre Team. In 1968 he enrolled in the Higher Institute for Physical Education .He was sabre champion of Bulgaria for 1970 and 1973 .As a permanent member of the National Sabre Team of Bulgaria he participated in all tournaments for the World Cup and for the World Championships during the 1968 - 1976 period.

In 1970 the National Sabre Team of Bulgaria finished for the first time among the top six teams in the world - it took the 5th place at the World Championship in Ankara ,Turkey . For this accomplishment Valentin Nikolov was awarded the "master of Sports" title[Protocol No.14/October,12,1970] by the Central Council of the Bulgarian Union for Physical Culture and Sports.

In 1972 he took part in the Olympic Games in Munich,Germany.

In 1974 he won the 2nd place at the "Ramon Fonst" tournament in Havana,Cuba.

In 1976 he quit his activities as a competitor and started practicing as an assistance coach of the Bulgarian National Sabre Team, preparing the team for the 1977 World Student's Games in Sofia,Bulgaria.Th team took 5th place in the Games.

After the 1977 World Student;s Games he quit practicing as the National Team assistant coach and started to train beginner kids at the Central Sports Army Club.In 197 his competitors became the Champions of Bulgaria in the up to 14-year old age group. In 1978 he graduated and got his University diploma from the Higher Institute for Physical Culture and Sports as a qualified "Physical training teacher" in the specialty of fencing [Diploma,series OYu,No.007783/July,4,1978]

In 1979 he was appointed Head Coach of the Bulgarian National Sabre Team and started to prepare the team for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow,USSR. In Moscow the competitors of Bulgaria for the first time went into Olympic Games finals for the 4th and 5th place. For this accomplishment Valentin Nikolov was awarded with the "Special Merits" medal by the Central Council of the Bulgarian Union for Physical Culture and Sports[Protocol No.9/October,1,1980] and with the "Medal of Labor" by the Bulgaria State Council [Decree No.2778/December,19,1980]

In 1981 as a result of his disagreement with the expressed downgrading of this accomplishment by the participants in the National Conference on Fencing in Bulgaria, he quit the post of the National Team Head Coach.

In 1984 on the invitation of the Bulgarian Fencing Federation, he returned as the Head Coach of the Bulgarian National Sabre Team and was training the team until 1991.The results accomplished by the team of the said period were as follows :

1985 = Bulgarian competitors finished up for a total of six times for the World Cup finals: 3 times-1st place ,and 1 time each-3th,4th,5th places. = A Bulgarian competitor won the World Sabre Cup. = At the World Championship in Barcelona,Spain three Bulgarian competitors qualified for the finals: 2nd,3rd and 8th places , in the team competition Bulgaria for the first time ever won a medal at a World Championship: a silver medal[2nd place] For this accomplishments Valentin Nikolov was awarded the title "Coach of Merit in Fencing" [Protocol A-34,Decision No.3,1143/October,14,1985] by the Central Council of the Bulgarian Union for Physical Culture and Sports.

1986 = Bulgarian competitors qualified for a total of 8 times in the finals of the World Cup: 1 time each-1st,2nd,4th,6th and 7th places , and 2 times each- 8th place. = A Bulgaria competitor won the World Sabre Cup. = At the World Championship in Sofia,Bulgaria two Bulgarian competitors qualified for the finals: 3rd and 7th places , in the team competition Bulgaria won the bronze medal[3rd place]

1987 = Bulgarian competitors qualified for a total of 6 times for the finals of the World Cup Tournaments: 1 time each - 1st,4th,5th and 8th places , and 2 times each - 6th place. = A Bulgarian competitor finished up 3rd in the "Masters" tournament[a tournament for the top 8 competitors in the overall World Cup standing]. = At the World Championship in Lausanne,Switzerland the Bulgarian team won a silver medal[2nd place].

1988 = Bulgarian competitors qualified for a total of 6 times for the World Cup tournament finals: 1 time each - 1st,3rd,4th and 5th places , and 2 times - 2nd place. = Bulgaria finished up 3rd in the World Cup standing by Nations. = a Bulgarian competitor took 2nd place in the "Masters" tournament.

1989 = Bulgarian competitors qualified for a total of 5 times for the World Cup tournament finals:1 time- 4th place , and 2 times each 3rd and 7th places. = A Bulgarian competitor took 7th place in the "Masters" tournament. = Bulgaria finished up 3rd in the World Cup standing by Nations. = In the World Championship in Denver,USA a Bulgarian competitor qualified for the finals - 6th place.

1990 = A Bulgarian competitor took 3rd place in the "Masters" tournament.

During the 1990-1991 period as a result of the general political and economic crisis in Bulgaria , the training and the competitive activities of the team sharply reduced its quality.In March,1991 , after a privately financed sponsorship for taking part in the World Cup tournament in Washington, USA , Valentin Nikolov did not come back to his country . On April,1,1991 his employment contract as a Head Coach of the Bulgarian National Sabre Team was discontinued[Entered into Employment Records Book No.886/April,1,1991.
