Uroš Predić

Uroš Predić (Orlovat, December 7 1857 - Belgrade, February 11 1953.), was one of the greatest Serbian realist painters, beside Paja Jovanović.

He was born in Orlovat, and attended primary school in Crepaja. After finishin gimnasium in Pančevo (this school was later named after him), he went to Vienna to study on academy in 1876.

Kosovo maiden

He finished Art academy in Vienna in 1880. in the class of professor Christian Grieppenkerl. During his studies, he received Gundel's prize - for male model painting in oil. In 1882, he worked in privete studio of professor Grieppenkerl, and in period 1883 - 1885 was an assistant on Art academy in Vienna. In that time, under instruction of professor Grieppenkerl, and architect Hanzen, he painted 13 paintings of mythology content for the parliament building in Vienna. In 1885, he returns to Orlovat, where he paints a series of paintings about the life of his fellow villagers. After that, in period 1886 - 1889, he lived in Belgrade, in period 1890 - 1893 in Novi Sad and Stari Bečej. In period 1894 - 1909, Predić was in Orlovat, and since 1909, until his death, he lived in Belgrade. He made the first exibition of his paintings in 1888 in Belgrade. He made a lot of exibitions, both in Serbia and aboard. In his opus, prevail portraits and icons.

He was one of the founders of the "Lada" society in 1904, and was its president. He elected as associate member of the Serbian Royal Academy in January 26, 1909, and on February 3, 1910 as regular member. He was one of the founders of the Society of painters in Belgrade in 1919, and was its first president.

Some of his famous works are Merry brothers, Orphan (on mother's grave), historical painting Bosnia-Herzegovinian fugitives but one of his most famous paintings is Kosovo maiden. Predić painted the famous portraits of the presidents of Serbian academy: Sima Lozanić, Stojan Novaković (1920), Jovan Žujović (1921), Jovan Cvijić (1923), Slobodan Jovanović (1930), Bogdan Gavrilović (1935) и Aleksandar Belić (1940). He also painted portraits of Mihajlo Perović Alas (1943), Ksenija Atanasijević (1917), Branislav Petronijević (1911) etc.

Uroš Predić painted icons for Bečej orthodox church, and icons for the chapel of Bogdan Dunđerski.

He died in 1953 in Belgrade, at the age of 96, as the oldest Serbian painter. He was burried in Orlovat.
