Notable people

Sandra Lee, of the show "Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee" on the Food Network, claims to have gone to UWL, but I was unable to verify whether she just attended or graduated. Can anyone verify and add to section? --Faith healer 11:55, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

According to her website, Sandra Lee Biography, she went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, not UW-L. --Crosscountrycpjon 22:46, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Articles relating to University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

I started an article about Thomas Morris who got legislature through the Wisconsin State Legislature establishing La Crosse State. Also I started 3 articles about Morris Hall, Wittich Hall and, Main Hall in relationship to being on the list of National Historic Landmarks. On Morris Hall, Susan Hessel wrote a book about the building and which I read and included in the article. Thank you-RFD 15:09, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

GA review

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
a (fair representation): b (all significant views):
  5. It is stable.
  6. It contains images, where possible, to illustrate the topic.
a (tagged and captioned): b lack of images (does not in itself exclude GA): c (non-free images have fair use rationales):
  7. Overall:
    a Pass/Fail:

Article is well written and well organized. The article has some good references, but most of these are simply URL links to the article. It would help to review WP:CITE for tips on how to format references. Full citations should contain author, title, date of publication, where published, when the URL was accessed, etc. This is to ensure that the reference is still somewhat useful should the URL disappear after a period of time. However, this minor formatting aspect is not the main reason for not attaining GA status.-done

The primary reason for not listing as a GA is original research. There are some significant sections of the article with no references, and some major statements that need to be referenced. For example:

  • "Originally known for its nationally recognized physical education program," - this definitely needs a citation.-done
  • "Many of the university's accredited degree programs in science and business have earned distinction for excellence."-done
  • The entire history section.-done
  • "Microbiology and exercise and sport science are designated as UW System Centers of Excellence, and the College of Business Administration holds national accreditation."-done
  • "UW-La Crosse also offers Wisconsin's only nationally-accredited degrees in recreation management and therapeutic recreation, the UW System's only nuclear medicine technology program, and the Midwest's only undergraduate archaeology major."-done
  • "9,438 students enrolled for the 2005-2006 school year. There are 8,133 undergraduate students, 1,264 graduate students, 548 multicultural students, and 160 international students representing 37 states and 39 countries. UW-L has a student/teacher ratio of 22:1 and the average class size is 28 students."-done
  • The 'notable alumni' and 'notable faculty' sections.
  • List is probably incomplete -- those are the ones that jump out at me.

The history section is very short. This could be developed.-done

It's generally bad practice in wikipedia to link to external sites in the text of an article, like with the links to various colleges & schools. External links should either be converted to other wiki articles, or in this case, since individual colleges & schools are probably not notable enough for their own articles, just not linked. -done

The 'campus' section is good. Reasonably descriptive. However, again, it lacks references where they are needed. Nice touch to add a link to the fight song under the traditions section,...-done

The 'past notable speakers' section needs some descriptive introduction text. Are we talking about past graduation speakers, or individuals who were invited to campus to give lectures during the academic year? My assumption would be past graduation speakers, but a bit of descriptive text would help here.-done

The external links section could probably be pared down a bit. Lots of those should be used as inline citations. The link to the school newspaper is unnecessary, since it's already mentioned earlier in the article. Links to individual departments within the university are not necessary here; just provide the link to the main school site, and that main page should be organized well enough to find individual departments. Links to various articles and press releases on the site, however, would be helpful as inline citations to various parts (like the athletic national titles).-done

Hope this helps. You might also want to review WP:WIAGA for the good article criteria. WP:CITE and WP:V would be helpful with regard to the citation issues.

I think it's getting very close to good article. Just fix a few things and it'll be there. Cheers! Dr. Cash 03:48, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

La Crosse State University-

The article looks pretty good. However, I have doubts about adding notable alumni and faculty. They may be notable to La Crosse State and the La Crosse community, but, they may not meet Wikipedia's notability standards, and, therefore, may be deleted. Thanks-RFD 15:11, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

I would have to agree with the notable faculty section being somewhat unnecessary. However, I think that the notable alumni is worth keeping. NFL players, an olympic gold medalist, radio/tv personalities, polititians, etc. are worth noting. As a related rant, I get frustrated with editors who are so quick to delete information. As long as something is not completely unimportant and of no benefit to anyone, I don't understand why it needs to be deleted. One of Wikipedia's main pros is that it can be more comprehensive then other encyclopedias thanks to the wonders of the WWW and an endless supply of writers. --Crosscountrycpjon 22:25, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Many thanks for your comments. I agree Wikipedia is more comprehensive, then other encyclopedias. However, some editors of Wikipedia get into editting wars, debating what should be kept and what should be deleted. This bothers myself. As for La Crosse State, the list of famous alumni is not complete. RFD 20:30, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Right you are about the famous alumni list not being complete. I am having trouble finding a good list of notable alumni. You would think that the school would list any alumni that were even somewhat worth noting, but I have been unable to located such a list. --Crosscountrycpjon 03:01, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
The Development Office at the Cleary Alumni Center probably has the information about notable alumni. The office probably will have information about notable faculty from UW-La Crosse also. Thanks---RFD 14:42, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
I haven't been able to locate anything about a development office on the school's website... --Crosscountrycpjon 21:13, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Eugene Murphy Library-University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

Eugene Murphy Library at La Crosse State needs to be added. Thanks-RFD 15:35, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Masabuchi-UW-La Crosse (sic?)

There is a famous singer from Japan, Masabuchi (sic?). He went to La Crosse State. I never heard of him. However, I added a sentence about he going to La Crosse State in the article. How famous is this guy? Thanks-RFD 15:26, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Judging by Google results, he's got fans in Japan, and his UW-LC connection is prominently mentioned. I notice, however, that the account that created his article never made any other edits, before or since; he might fail the notability test, if challenged. --Orange Mike 16:06, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey Orange Mike, I haven't been able to find anything about Masabuchi on a google search. I would like to learn more about this guy so I would appreciate if you could give me a link to your google search. Thanks --Crosscountrycpjon 20:56, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh, nevermind I found some stuff about him, but not much. I forgot the "h." Yeah, there isn't really a lot of information about him. Probably would be easier to find info about him in japanese, but my japanese is a little rusty...;-) Anyone who can speak Japanese want to help us out?? --Crosscountrycpjon 21:10, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the responses to my question. RFD 14:40, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Franciscan Skemp Medical Center

I started an article about the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center-it was badly needed.Thanks-RFD 15:22, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks. I was wondering why there wasn't an article about it already... --Crosscountrycpjon 02:29, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Notable Faculty section and Cleary Alumni Center

1. I restored the notable faculty section-there are existing articles and there will be more articles about notable professors being added. One must be realistic.
2. A section about the Cleary Alumni Center. The developement office is in the center. Mike Desmond has his office there-the new stadium. Some sort of section about the Cleary Alumni Center should be added. Thank you-RFD 15:53, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

PS- The UW-La Crosse Foundation is in the website-this would be consider the developement office. When you write the section about Cleary Alumni Center, include a paragraph about UW-La Crosse Foundation-the office is at Cleary Alumni Center. Thanks-RFD 16:02, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Cleary Alumni and Friends Center/ University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Foundation-

I added the section about the Cleary Alumni and Friends Center. It can always be revise. I am flexible. I made refernce to the UW- La Crosse Foundation. This section was badly needed. My apologies for any problems. Thank you-RFD 12:20, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Category:University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

Thanks for adding the Category:University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. This makes things easier. I added Morris Hall, Main Hall, and Wittich Halls articles to the category as well as the Thomas Morris article. -RFD 13:39, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Patrick Randolph

Someone put a Patrick Randolph at the notable people section in the La Crosse, Wisconsin article. I removed it. This man is a poet, and college professor with some connections with UW-La Crosse. Has anyone heard of this gentleman? Thank you-RFD 12:04, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm, Patrick Randolph.... never heard of him. Sorry. --Crosscountrycpjon 04:10, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Patrick Randolph teaches English as a second language at UW-La Crosse and writes poetry. He and his wife lives in La Crosse. Thank you- RFD 15:21, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

The entry about Tsuyoshi Mashabuchi going to UW-La Crosse and getting kicked out was deleted from the Notable Alumni section of the UW-La Crosse article. Subsequently- the article got redirect to the existing article: Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi-- same man. This still does not resolved the question:Did Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi go to La Crosse State. This is getting muddle.I did ask this question at the discussion section of the Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi article. Thank you-RFD 21:25, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Uwlathletics.gif

Image:Uwlathletics.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

university seal vs. university wordmark

Hi there! I removed the image of the university seal from the infobox at the top of the article. Per the non-free content criteria:

Minimal usage. As few non-free content uses as possible are included in each article and in Wikipedia as a whole. Multiple items are not used if one will suffice; one is used only if necessary.

— Criterion #3A

Essentially, the point of the seal and the logo are to illustrate the university as a whole in a way that a mere photo cannot. That's okay to do on a limited basis. However, it's not a fair use to use both the seal and the wordmark logo, since they serve the same function. I've therefore removed the seal. Cheers! Esrever (klaT) 22:09, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Wow, talk about dumb. If you want to fix that kind of thing in every university page you are in for a lot of work. You can start at the University of Wisconsin page where I get the idea from. Such contributions will without a doubt make the world a better place... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crosscountrycpjon (talkcontribs) 22:43, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, I'm sorry you feel that way. At the same time, though, it's not my policy, but Wikipedia's. I just fix these things as I find them, and this article happened to be one that I came across today. But thanks for pointing out the problem on the University of Wisconsin article—I'll fix that one next. Cheers! Esrever (klaT) 22:49, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

School Traditions

Lantern - The article currently states that the lantern in the clock tower is lit only during homecoming. As of this time, the lantern is lit every night at dusk. No articles could be found containing evidence that the lantern was ever intended to be lit only during homecoming after its relocation to the clock tower. I will continue to investigate this and provide sources to as they are found. GerlachBP (talk) 16:40, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Good Article nomination: failed

There's a lot to work on, but I'll put it on hold so that you can address the problems.

  • Table of Contents shouldn't be all tiny like that
  • Image:Uwlseal.jpg needs a fair use rationale
  • "Notable and historic buildings" and "Notable recreational facilities" -- the inclusion of this information is fine, but it shouldn't be set up as a list like this. Each section should be introduced as a whole (i.e. discuss all the recreational facilities at the school, then get into the specific few you've selected). Ditto for "Student publications" - each subsection should be integrated prose, not broken 2- or 3-sentence lists.
  • The following all sounds like anecdotal/folk knowledge and has no citations:
    • "The student body is very active in athletics, whether they be varsity, intramural, or simply recreational. The Recreational Eagle Center is often filled with students trying to stay fit and healthy. Students frequently take advantage of the many rustic areas for hiking and biking in and around La Crosse. Renting a canoe or kayak from the Recreational Eagle Center to take on one of the region's many rivers is also a popular activity."
    • "Popular destinations for students include Grandad Bluff, Riverside Park and the Mississippi River, Rudy's drive-in, the Pearl ice cream shop, the many bars and clubs located on 3rd Street, the Rivoli movie theater, and the rest of downtown La Crosse."
  • "UW-La Crosse and its student's have a strong commitment to diversity and acceptance of their fellow students no matter their race, gender, or sexual orientation." First of all, "student's" should be "students". Second, it sounds like POV-pushing and a rather suspect claim that all the school's students have this commitment. Should probably be rephrased to say that the administration's official stance is one of commitment to diversity, etc. etc.
  • "Symbols and traditions": rather than simply reprint the lyrics to the fight song and alma mater, they should be discussed. When are they sung? By whom? Who wrote them? When and why? What is the history of this tradition? The other subsections in this section do a good job of addressing those questions. (And the lyrics could be included as part of this, maybe in a floating quotebox or something, assuming there is no copyright on them -- something you should check.)
  • "Athletics" section starts off strong but sort of peters out into one-sentence paragraphs and disjointed statements, including an external link.
  • "Notable alumni" and "Notable faculty" should be in prose, not a list.
  • Citations 80, 81, and 82 are errors in the "References" section. Also, a scrollbox should not be used -- I was informed that it can cause problems for readers using certain browsers.
  • Check all the image licensing tags. Image:Oldgraff.jpg looks rather suspect -- from uwlax.edu, but licensed under GFDL?
  • Get someone to copyedit this article thoroughly. I saw some various capitalization and formatting errors.

Some general recommendations for the article (not binding for GA):

  • Years should not be linked if they're not attached to a date, but this is a nebulous point in MoS
  • Move the free images to Commons
  • Try to vectorize the seal and make that whitespace around the circle transparent

It looks like a lot of objections, but this is actually a very strong article. Most of it is blanketed in reliable citations and you're well on your way to a GA and perhaps FAC. The main problem is the prose, which needs to be tightened up a lot as noted. Drop me a line when you've addressed these problems, and I'll give it another look. Dylan (talk) 19:16, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

I see that a few of my objections have been addressed, but big-picture, not very much progress has been made at ten days. Keep at it, and feel free to ask me personally to re-review it once you've addressed them all. Dylan (talk) 07:09, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
