Name[edit]

The article states "and named after the word 'chief,' the head or leader of a group" but doesn't provide a reference. I have an alternative theory that it may be named after the senior NCO rank so critical to the Navy. Is there any way to find out for sure? My dad served on this ship. The following is copied from another page and I think it answers your question.
"USS Chief (MCM-14) is an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship of the United States Navy. She was named for the former USS Chief (AM-315), which in turn was named in honor of all chief petty officers of the US Navy." Stg1.stewart (talk) 04:37, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
