Lismore Castle[edit]

Was this castle burnt as the article claims? The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire claims in her book "Chatsworth: the house, p.35.", that it was occupied and by both sides, no mention of a burning.  Giacomo  22:39, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I never heard that Lismore was damaged during the Civil War. I don't think the claim is correct. I'll tag it with 'citation needed' and remove in due coarse if none is provided. RashersTierney (talk) 23:55, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Was burned according to one author anyway folks, Michael Hopkinson, Green Against Green, p 195, "Provisional Government concern that the splendours of Unionist houses and the treasures within them should be preserved, faile to save, for instance, Lismore Castle, Co Cork from being burnt in September 1922." In her book, the Duchess says (page 35) "allthough it escaped being burnt down, it was occupied by both sides and enough damage was done to the roof and many of the rooms to make uninhabitable" This sound to me more like vandalism or even just wear and tear by troops than a deliberate burning, especially as burnings when they occurred seem to have been very efficiently executed. Also I suspect what an early 2Oth century duke considered "uninhabitable" and the rest of mankind considers uninhabitable may be two different states.  Giacomo  08:33, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No mention whatever of significant damage during this period by any party from the castle's official history page. The Hopkinson reference, considering a different county is given, looks less than unambiguous. I did smile when I read the castle's website. It's trying to hire it out for a vast fortune to happy holiday makers, I suppose it's not going to say "come and meet the friendly natives - whose grandparents torched the place" My hunch is that is was probably vandalised and knocked about by troops and maybe even sufered a small fire, perhaps even an accidental one, but no serious attempt to burn it down was made. The Duchess may not be the most impartial reference, I'm sure there must be a better history of the castle somewhere - but where?  Giacomo  12:51, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Am a bit tied up today, but will check it out when I next visit the National Library. The OPW have a series on architecture of national significance on a county-by-county basis.
