Right wing paper[edit]

User:Platox added the following comment:

The Sligo Champion is regarded locally as a right wing paper which promotes the interests of the local establishment. It's editorial style is dictatorial and those that attempt to challenge the status quo are not given space to express their views.

I would refute this statement, as it's not something I've heard levelled against the paper (lived in Sligo town most of my life). In fact in the 19th Century, the Sligo Champion was seen as a left-wing paper, and frequently deridred as such by it's major rival, the conservative Sligo Independent. I'd be interewted in seeing some facts supporting this statement.--The.Q | Talk to me 14:12, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not 100% sure about that - both papers in the town are to some degree seen as being "in the pocket" of the Chamber of Commerce - therefore leaning towards the right and business view of things. Finding that view stated in a reliable source rather than upstairs in Feehily Pub is otherthing altogether. Being right wing is hardly a surprise as the two largest parties in the 26 are right wing (rather than far right).--Vintagekits 14:36, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd have to agree with you there, I suppose. I was thinking more along the lines of "far right". Perhaps we've become so used to FF and FG, that you almost think of them as being centrist (or, if Bertie is to be believed, socialist!).

However, to get back to the original statement, to say that the paper is regarded locally as right wing would lead the disinterested reader to suppose that this is a stated objective of the paper, or at least that it is widely acknowledged by readers as such, in the same way as the "red-tops" were in Britain. I'm not really sure that this is the case.

In fact, the more I read that statement, the more I dislike its tone. The second sentence (editorial style is dictatorial and not given space to express their views) is hardly fair comment without some evidence to back it up. I've certainly seen all sides given space to air their views.

This weeks front page (dated 16 May 2007, for example, leads with a story about local politician Declan Bree (who could hardly by any stretch of the imagination be called right-wing!!), who has decided to resign from the Labour Party, basically because they've abandonded their left wing roots. --The.Q | Talk to me 16:02, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if that example proves or disproves that they right wing to be honest - ould Seamus McGarry doesn't know if he is right or left wing either! Anyway thats for another day - and as all the comments about the Champion are unsourced its simply WP:OR and should be removed. You've left a message for the guy that entered that bit and if he cant come up with a source within the next 7 days then I say chop it out - you actually dont even have to wait the 7 days and are only being courteous by doing so. --Vintagekits 16:21, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
