Influence of his own life experience?[edit]

Iain Banks' widow, Adele, has written that he never would have written the book if he'd known about his cancer diagnosis. To wit:

Had he known he had cancer, he would never have written about it. The inaccuracies appearing about why and when this book was written make me think of Guy in The Quarry, gleefully misquoting Dorothy Parker when he exclaims, “What fresh bollockry is this?” Iain knew that had he survived his cancer, he would have spent the rest of his life correcting the facts at every event and in every interview!

I don't know enough about Wikipedia's style to presume to add this in, given that it contradicts what's already here. I'm hoping someone with more knowledge of such things will make a correction or addition, though. 96.253.99.4 (talk) 22:11, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Autistic[edit]

"It deals with an autistic youth"? I Am Not A Doctor; but I would not describe Kit as autistic. He is definitely on the Asperger spectrum; but he functions pretty well, with excellent use of language, and has passed a driving test. Maybe someone with more knowledge of this field can comment? As far as I can see, Asperger is regarded as a mild form of autism. There are high-functioning people both in the autistic and Asperger communities. See the Autism spectrum and High-functioning autism articles. -- kazerniel (talk) 22:03, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Austism, according to the people who diagnosed my son, is no longer - in the UK - subdivided into Asperger's or whatnot; it's simply Autism, and then the definition goes into whether it's high functioning, mild, severe or whatever is appropriate.
