This article should be moved to The Pig and Whistle once the AFD is resolved as this is the proper name for the program. I'd move it now only I don't know if you're allowed to relocate articles once AFD has begun. 23skidoo 12:07, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed disambiguation[edit]

This appears to have become two articles at some point, and points up the need for a disabiguation page between the television show, the traditional name, and (possibly in the future) specific pubs by this name. Also, Wassail gives a different origin of the name, reproduced below.

British Pubs named 'Pig and Whistle'

The Norse word for Barley was 'byg', as in modern Danish. This terminology still persists in areas of Britain formerly part of the 'Danelaw', for example the 'Bigg Market' in Newcastle on Tyne, the former barley market. Today many British pubs are still named 'Pig and Whistle' which is a corruption of the name of an early Medieval feast known as the 'Byggen Wassail' celebrated at the end of the barley harvest, malted barley being the main ingredient of ale.
