Add 3 way (The golden rule) as next single 3-Way (The Golden Rule) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.250.60.19 (talk) 07:44, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Number of Promo Singles[edit]

I think we should wait until 3 promo singles are confirmed to add it in the article. For all we know, this may be the only one. Also, there is only one more Monday- May 16th -to release a promo single. The following Monday is the 23rd, the albums release date. This is why 3 promo singles does not make sense. Zpenguin23 (talk) 16:22, 8 May 2011 (UTC)Zpenguin23[reply]

I agree, it will be most likely just 2 promo singles. 84.113.151.242 (talk) 17:30, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Fame and The Fame Monster both had one promo each, this could be it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mi.bryson (talkcontribs) 18:21, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lady GaGa has said she would release another promo next week at the same time. http://www.ladygaga.com/news/default.aspx Mi.bryson (talk) 20:26, 9 May 2011 (UTC)--Mi.bryson (talk) 20:26, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion?[edit]

Instead of deleting the article, wait until the release when many reviews will come out. --Sricsi (talk) 16:38, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lady Gaga has confirmed the release of the promotional single on her website. I agree, wait until it is released, which is tomorrow the 8th. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mi.bryson (talkcontribs) 17:55, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Third Studio Album?[edit]

I assumed that 'Born This Way' was Lady Gaga's second studio album, not her third. The Fame Monster is an EP so Born This Way is not the third studio album... it's the second. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.26.189.97 (talk) 18:05, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We have gone through this already. Gaga herself called Born This Way as her third studio album, so there's no point of taking this thing up again. Squidoh (talk) 15:43, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Born This Way is her 3rd studio album. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Niamhh (talkcontribs) 08:39, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion?[edit]

Now the song has been released is it really worth considering it for deletion? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.27.8.71 (talk) 20:34, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was literally just commercially released only minutes ago, give it time before people remove the deletion considerations. Jeez. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.195.33.79 (talk) 20:38, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alright then I was only suggesting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.27.8.71 (talk) 20:40, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Leave it, it's a promotional single, that's what it should be listed as. calvin999 (talk) 22:03, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, because if many other can have an article for every song in their albums why can't Gaga have an article for a promo single? Deletion considerations can be deleted by anyone and since the issue is settled (the single was released and there are many reviews to come) the "Deletion considerations" will be removed.
Since there is still an active deletion discussion at WP:AFD, any arguments for or against deletion should happen over there. The AfD template should not be removed from the article until that discussion has closed. Regards, Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 01:10, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
the song is at #1 on the UK iTunes. Deleting it would be pointless as it will be recreated on sunday.

The song is No.1 on itunes in 22 countries and you're considering it for deletion? MASSIVE EYE ROLL. Ridiculous. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.168.51.149 (talk) 10:27, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Composition[edit]

Could someone put in the composition of The Edge of Glory section that the song is in the key F#m at 128 BPM? Samlikeswiki (talk) 01:50, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Receipt? — Legolas (talk2me) 09:09, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if this counts, but I put it into the program VirtualDJ and it told me what the key and BPM was. If this is not reliable, I can understand. In that case we should just wait for more technical details on the song as they become available. Samlikeswiki (talk) 13:09, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Critical reception re: Rolling Stone preview[edit]

I don't gather from the Rolling Stone source that "You and I" was one of the four tracks submitted. To me, the article indicates that four other tracks were previewed and "You and I" was discussed based on a live performance. --Another Believer (Talk) 23:57, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What's the AFD? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.153.27.224 (talk) 15:50, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mikomango, the AFD process exists to stop unnecessary articles being created, its nothing to do with Wiki-bureaucracy. If you feel like that your problem. IP, please sign your posts from next time and the wikilink should direct you to what's AFD. — Legolas (talk2me) 15:53, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Legolas, it saddens me that you do not understand the meaning of the word "bureaucracy" and bureaucracies work. A social process that was once entirely acceptable can be abused in a bureaucratic way. Hey, you do not know the definitions to commonly-used English words, your problem. I will simply assume good faith on your end.--mikomango (talk) 17:44, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
if you feel like WP is such a place, again that's your problem and this has nothing to do with the article's discussion which is what the talk page is for. Please direct it to someplace else. — Legolas (talk2me) 17:56, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Protection[edit]

So much for Wikipedia being the "online encyclopedia that anyone can edit." Basically it's become an online site for slanted press releases and one-sided chart/boxscore information. I'm sure it will take an act of God to get someone to post that the single dropped from #3 to #19 in its second week. 24.211.211.161 (talk) 18:46, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Now this is just ridiculous. Why is this article protected? You complain on how this article doesn't meet Wikipedia's policies, and then you block it so some people aren't able of improving it. I just realized how silly (not to say other word, because I would be blocked) Wikipedia long-time editors are. So, so sad. --190.43.48.38 (talk) 22:20, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article was protected from continuous vandalism by IP users. Maybe not you, but there are users who do that. Surprised? — Legolas (talk2me) 05:20, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Then block who has to be blocked. But protecting the entire article for a few is an overreaction, don't you think? --Evengan (talk) 16:37, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Why is there still a debate about whether this page should be deleted?! 1. It's an official single 2. It has been reviewed 3. It's been out for 4 days; that is about 96 whole hours! Therefore, it must be kept! Why is it still being thought about?! Make your (pardon my French) fucking minds up!

Once the AfD is started, it should be allowed to run its course. At the time of this article's creation, a reasonable argument could have been made that the song was not notable per Wikipedia's established guidelines. --StrikerforceTalk Review me! 23:29, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Keep It[edit]

I see no reason to delete considering the fact that it is from her highly anticipated album and it's the third single. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Codelyokofan29 (talkcontribs) 23:16, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Sign your name using four tildes (~~~~).
  2. This is not on the actual deletion page, so it will not count towards anything.
  3. At Wikipedia, the existence of something (let's say a single in this case) does not make it notable. Music projects have to meet the music notability guideline for inclusion into this encyclopedia.
  4. Don't bother moving this to the deletion page. Considering new developments, I am withdrawing my nomination. I Help, When I Can. [12] 23:39, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in The Edge of Glory[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of The Edge of Glory's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

One of Gaga's Greatest Songs[edit]

Rolling Stone has called The Edge of Glory as Gaga's third greatest song ever, behind Paparazzi and Bad Romance. They said: "Is it a song, or a hurricane? Gaga's sublime dance-rock anthem, written about her grandparents, is powered by bombastic power chords and even more bombastic lyrics.", finally stating that "Just when you think it can't get any bigger, Clarence Clemons steps into the spotlight…" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Evengan (talkcontribs) 18:36, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request[edit]

In the line "The Edge of Glory" was released digitally on May 9, 2011, and officially impacted United States mainstream radio on May 17, 2011 in the lede, I think "impacted" is a poor word. Will someone please change it to "entered" or "officially began playing on"? Thanks. 68.35.40.154 (talk) 18:44, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not done "Impacted" is the term used by the radio industry. Adabow (talk · contribs) 19:21, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, guess what Wikipedia is not? If you guessed "the radio industry" then you are correct. Unless there is specific justification we don't use jargon—we use senses found in standard dictionaries. To regular readers the sentence sounds like the song had a meteoric collision with airwaves which is of course absurd. There is no justification for using this obscure sense in defiance of common sense. 68.35.40.154 (talk) 23:51, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not done As Adabow said to you, common jargon by industry measures are acceptable. — Legolas (talk2me) 04:37, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We're not writing for radio-industry insiders, but for a much wider readership. I can cope with "impacted" without the subsequent "on" (which would normally be required, but is probably not used in this sense within the industry). What I can't cope with is the lack of clarity.
So what exactly does it mean? I'm struggling to work it out, which is not a good sign that the meaning is clear enough for our readers. Does it mean, for instance, that radio stations were permitted to broadcast the item from May 17 onwards? If so, why not just say "and were broadcast by US mainstream radio from May 17, 2011 ...? The problem with "impacted" for the normal readers is that they're likely to understand it as "had an impact", which is not really what you mean, is it. To start with, any "impact" (an assumption, actually) would be on the listeners, not on the radio industry. This needs to be recast. Tony (talk) 07:57, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How does "sent to radio" sound? Adabow (talk · contribs) 07:59, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's better, but you don't like my suggestion? It seems simpler and more obvious to me. Tony (talk) 08:03, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The thing is that radio probably started playing the song before May 17, but Lady Gaga's labels added the song to mainstream playlists for May 17. Individual radio stations may have started to play the song, although mainstream radio US-wide would not have added it to their daily rotation. I believe that labels pay for songs to be added to such playlists, thereby promoting the songs. I may have just confused you even more (like many other US things, I don't quite understand fully), so Legolas, could you also explain? Adabow (talk · contribs) 08:14, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I solicited Tony's opinion here. 68.35.40.154 (talk) 08:39, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you IP, and Tony, Adabow is right that the song might have been played in the radio before the impact date. I understand the "general" reader understanding thing, and would like to suggest that if we change it, we change it to something a little more explanatory. Like instead of "impacted US radio..." we can write "The song was added to US radio's playlist on .....". Thereby we clarify the "adding of a song" also, and it removes any redundancy of whether it was played before "date" or after "date" etc. — Legolas (talk2me) 13:19, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Video reaction[edit]

Many fans disliked the video, saying it was "too simple" or they "expected more" and "that the video doesn't compliment to the song". Though the critical response from fans some actually liked the the video for it's simplicity.

Entirely unsourced and basically boils down to "some people liked it, some people didn't it." Useless. Additionally, that second sentence, isn't well-written at all. Though the what? 12.162.122.5 (talk) 15:53, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

On Monday, July 18, 2011, Lady Gaga appeared on Sirius/XM's Howard Stern Show where she performed bothe The Edge of Glory & Hair. "By the end of the interview, Stern became an official little monster, declaring that Gaga's acoustic version of 'The Edge of Glory' was “one of the best performances we’ve ever had on the show.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/19/lady-gaga-howard-stern_n_902575.html

Chart performance[edit]

It should be noted that The Edge Of Glory climbed from No. 37 to No. 7 after the performance on the Germany's Next Top Model finale. The song did so without an official release as the physical release is on July 8, 2011 (e.g. Amazon.de) and the version you can buy in digital shops (I-Tunes/Amazon.de) is the album track, and not a seperate single version, so there hasn't been a digital release neither. --79.199.52.239 (talk) 11:00, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

But you can look it all up, I don't think a source is necessary therefore. BTW: The song climbs to No. 6 this week. Could you include this please? Some points[edit]

Can I just say that the Critical reception and the Music video Reception sub section are too long, especially the latter, which is excessively long, and that both should be shortened. It looks like a hardcore fan is trying to literally squeeze as much in as possible. There is too much to read in both sections. Quality over quantity is better sometimes. A quick read of this article tells me that the prose will need to undergo some copy-editing, and the content itself appears to be problematic, where information seems to be repeated and there is confusion surrounding the chronology. A little trimming may be needed, but don't start anything without me telling you what needs to be trimmed. —WP:PENGUIN · [ TALK ] 23:18, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Starting lead...

I'm not trimming anything at present, I will be copy-editing it. — Legolas (talk2me) 04:10, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lead
  • " "The Edge of Glory" is a song by American recording artist and songwriter Lady Gaga, taken from her second studio album Born This Way (2011). " – Singles are taken from albums, whereas songs are directly from them. here you are referring to it as a song.
  • " Along with "Hair", it was originally released as one of two promotional singles before the release of Born This Way. " – So "Hair" was also initally a prom. single but was made a single afterwards? Reword.
  • " it was announced that it would serve as the album's third official single " – What does an unofficial single look like?
  • The phrase "features production from" seems erroneous. Production usually isn't a feature, it's one of the main aspects of a song. "Was produced by" sounds better.
  • White Shadow does not produce the song.
  • "Recording sessions for the song took place at The Living Room Studios in Oslo"
  • " "The Edge of Glory" is a dance song that speaks of the very last moments of living on Earth [life] " – It's not like Gaga's moving to the Moon now, is she?
  • " It is notable for the incorporation of a saxophone solo " – MOS:OPED
  • " with many deeming " → " who deemed " Red XN Done wrong.
  • " The song charted on the top-ten in several major music markets " – No hyphen.
  • " The video is notably simplistic in contrast to much of Gaga's previous work " – OPED once again. Watch out for such words.
  • " Such dramatic differences include the lack of intricate choreography, lack of back-up dancers, and the use of only one outfit designed by Versace " → " Such dramatic differences include the lack of intricate choreography and back-up dancers, as well as using only one outfit designed by Versace "
  • " Gaga has performed the song in several award shows, music festivals and events, each performance being notably different from the other. "
  • The infobox only seems to give the recording details of Gaga's vocals, not Clarice Clemens'.
    • What happened to the recording session info? That's important. And once you do that, I'd recommend the first paragraph have the background and chart performance information. The second paragraph should have recording, composition and critical reception, and the third paragraph should have promotional and miscellaneous info, such as the music video, live performances, remixes, covers, etc. In the 3rd paragraph, I'd also like a one sentence summary on the video's synopsis as well, rather than just the difference it has from Gaga's previous videos. —WP:PENGUIN · [ TALK ] 18:17, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have yet to review the Background thoroughly, but it looks like it will need some work.

Background
  • GENERAL ISSUE: The problem with this section is that it doesn't seem to follow a systematic order. Instead, it simply reads as a bunch of interviews/publications giving random tidbits of information, hard to comprehend.
I made the flow better I guess. — Legolas (talk2me) 16:32, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • " "The Edge of Glory" was written by Lady Gaga, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, while Gaga and Garibay produced it. " – "While" is not the appropriate conjunction to use here. A song can't be simultaneously written and produced.
  • It might be a good idea to let the readers know how Stephen Hill got a hold of the song in the first place.
  • " with the feeling that one is a champion " – "one" → "he or she"
I couldn't find this one.
Check again. Use the Find function if you use Windows. —WP:PENGUIN · [ TALK ] 18:17, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • " Regarding the song, Garibay told MTV News that he felt dance songs mostly start off as ballads, and that is the approach he undertook with "The Edge of Glory". According to him, Gaga wrote the song with the dance environment in her mind. "Yeah, they're dance, but I think the whole thing, too, is that they're songs and genuine to her," he concluded. " – Does not belong in this section. Move to Composition or Reception.
    • Nevermind, didn't realize, its Garibay and not a reporter who's talking. —WP:PENGUIN · [ TALK ] 11:06, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • " On May 5, 2011, Interscope sent out an e-mail to several radio stations across "
  • " United States stating " → " United States, which stated "
  • " "The Edge of Glory" started selling [a] considerable amount "
  • " The second promotional single was "Hair", released on May 16, 2011. " – Remove, it is distracting and irrelevant.
  • " She said, "My song THE EDGE OF GLORY will be released on itunes tomorrow to begin the countdown to album release! You want to see #TheEdgeSingleCover?" " Not only is this uncited but unnecessary and adds no meaning than what you have already written. Remove.
Recording and composition
  • " "The Edge of Glory" is an upbeat dance-pop and electro-pop song. " – Link genres.
  • " It is notable for the use of synthesizers executed in a manner highly influenced by smooth jazz " – Take a lucky guess.
  • " The song is less electro[nic] and more straightforward pop "
  • " with the lyrics—although glorifying risk-taking—is basically more about romance than indivitual inspiration " – Ungrammatical.
  • " with her vocals being " – WP:PLUSING
  • What's the name and location of the studio?
  • " She also requested him to add the sound of heartbeat at the start of the track "
  • Is " Contemporary Hit Radio " a proper noun?
  • " since Contemporary Hit Radio did not have any song with a saxophone solo, on their song playlists " – Remove comma.
  • " So Clemons flew from Florida to New York "
  • " She gave him very few instructions about how to play on the song, saying: " → " She simply told Clemons, "
  • " Is the "said Clemons" part a typo? Also, this quote needs WP:INCITE
  • The infobox says that the song was recorded in 2010 but where is the source to that? This is not even mentioned at all in the article prose. You have to make it obvious in some way that what you are telling is in chrono order.
  • " With Rolling Stone, Clemons described how he recorded the saxophone solo with Gaga. In January 2011, Clemons " – Too long of a transition into Clemons' POV. How about: " Clemons told Rolling Stone that in January 2011, he " (You have to tighten the prose) Red XN Made an obvious typo (missing word).
  • For a smoother flow, all the sax background should be in one paragraph and have Gaga's vocal recording info in a paragraph of its own.
  • " with Gaga's vocals being most exposed over the music " – More NOUNPLUSING
  • " clarified the song as a mixture of dance-pop " – Unlink dance-pop.
Critical reception
  • It is often better to avoid linking inside quotes.
  • " An hour before kicking off the final leg of The Monster Ball Tour, Gaga sent four tracks to Rolling Stone, including "Scheiße", "Yoü and I", and "Hair", to have an advance preview. " – Once you remove the "Hair" fact above, link the song here.
  • " Matthew Perpetua wrote a positive review from the song. " – Use colon.
  • Try and paraphrase parts of the quote so that you are only quoting the bare opinions and not the facts of Clarence's sax solo.
  • " but nevertheless it is captivating and catchy when one listens to it " – Comma after "nevertheless".
  • " Jody Rosen from the same publication " Put in a pair of commas around Rosen's description.
  • " This single certainly shows a softer side for the star. Her previous two Born This Way releases have been " – This part of the quote can be easily reworded.
  • " Natalie Finn from E! felt that whether one chose to read in between the lyrics " – I'm confused on what is being meant here.
  • " Elan also complimented Clemons' saxophone addition " – I think this can be connected with the previous sentence with a semi-colon.
  • " In another review, Dan Martin from NME " – Dan Martin wrote two reviews?
  • " Robert Copsey from Digital Spy commented that the song " – WP:OVERLINK
  • What was Slant critical of?
  • " Sal Cinquemani from the same publication " – Commas again.
Chart performance
  • " In the United States, "The Edge of Glory" debuted at number 31 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart, for the issue dated May 28, 2011. " — Shouldn't Billlboard actually link to Billboard charts and not Billboard (magazine)? Red XN Done wrong.
  • " her first ten official singles " — Once again, what's an unofficial single, then?
  • " enter the top-ten of the Hot 100 " — No hyphen.
  • " with the song rising to number 37 on the Radio Songs chart " → " as the song rose to number 37 on the Radio Songs chart "
  • " with overall airplay increasing " and " resulting in the song moving "
  • " back into the top-ten of the Hot 100, at number eight " — No hyphen.
  • " following the title track from Born This Way " — BTW overlink. Red XN Don't link.
  • " It sold another 166,000 digital downloads moving up to number seven on the Hot 100 " — Comma after "downloads".
  • " with 26,000 digital downloads sold and entering the Canadian Hot Digital Songs chart at number two " — Doesn't make sense.
  • " It was the top debuting song on the Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) chart of Canada, at number 42 " — Why are you introducing CHR's abbreviation now, when it was supposed to be done in the Composition section, and I don't believe Contemporary Hit Radio should be capitalized.
  • " and reached the top-ten of the CHR chart " — No hyphen. I should have said this earlier, but only use a hyphen when the word is used as an adjective, such as "top-ten singles chart".
Background
  • " At the BMI Pop Music Awards, Gaga's choreographer Laurieann Gibson said that they are going to film the music video for "The Edge of Glory" soon. " — Wrong tense. I think it would be "would be filming".
  • " she concluded by saying her production team were not ready for shooting yet " → " she concluded by saying her that production team was not ready for shooting yet "
  • " a doctor role like [in] the American show Dr. 90210 "
  • " and a group of military men for scenes involving rifles " → " and a group of military men for scenes that involve rifles "
  • " The music video director was confirmed as Joseph Kahn, who had previously directed the music videos for Gaga's 2009 singles, "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)" and "LoveGame", but Interscope Records confirmed that Kahn and Gaga parted ways due to collaborative misunderstandings, and Gaga's creative team, Haus of Gaga, directed the video instead. " — Let us break that sentence up.
  • " "did NOT direct Lady Gaga's 'Edge of Glory' video. Lady Gaga did – I don't co-direct. One canvas, one paintbrush. Respect the art. Very simple rule with me." " → Lady Gaga replaced him as the only director: "One canvas, one paintbrush. Respect the art. Very simple rule with me." " (Only quoted the bare opinion) Red XN Not done as shown.
  • " The final music video premiered on June 16, 2011 "
Synopsis
  • Remove the first sentence because it is redundant when the first few sentences tell the same thing, but in more detail.
  • " Her wardrobe throughout the entire video primarily consists of only one outfit which was designed by the late Gianni Versace. The dress consists of a S&M inspired outfit, with heavy gold jewelry[,] and studs on the leather, and vibrant nail polish and lipstick. " — These two sentences need sources because they are slightly trivial.
  • " coming from within the windows of the buildings and alleyways "
  • " along with smoke billowing out from the drains " → " as smoke billows out from the drains "

Not sure what is trying to be said here, but there is no genre mentioned within the article or within specific citations. For example, at one point it says electro-rock in the article, but the specific mention is not within the citation. Until you have specific sources giving the song a genre, we can't call it anything. Andrzejbanas (talk) 16:42, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Billboard's "20 Best Songs of the 2010s"[edit]

The title here is a misnomer. There's nothing "on the edge" about this track: like all of Lady Gaga's vital songs, it's fully committed, with lyrics that would fit the climactic scene of a war movie, an imperious beat, and synthesizers like battering rams. This song is also notable for its saxophone solo -- famously provided by the E Street Band's Clarence Clemons -- which predated 2014's explosion of sax hooks by multiple years. [2]

For future reference. –Chase (talk / contribs) 21:46, 12 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
