Rebel Flag

How come there's never been controversy about the program's use of the Rebel flag? It's like it was never an issue. How was it that New York-based CBS gave that program element its blessing, especially when African-Americans were becoming a greater force in entertainment? -Amit

I can only guess that it is because the flag painted on the General Lee is a sign of Bo and Luke's personal rebellion against the law in the town. To Bo and Luke (and many Southerners of that era and today), the Confederate flags are a matter of state's rights, not slavery as many today would paint it to be. And I don't have a picture that shows enough of the top of the General Lee (the name alone another symbol of the "Old South") to verify that it is actually the Confederate Battle Flag and not the Navy Jack (also called the "Rebel Flag").
What is even more surprising is that in the movie that is to be released this summer, the General Lee still has the same flag painted on the top, it still bears the name "General Lee" and the horn still plays Dixie. In this politically-correct world, and ultra-left leaning Hollywood in particular, a movie was allowed to be produced with these three (what many consider to be racist) symbols of the "Old South". I guess that the PC police whose job it is to ensure freedom of speech (as long as it doesn't disagree with them) failed in this instance.
I deplore racism too, but I also appreciate good traditions. To Bo and Luke, these three symbols of the "Old South" clearly speak to their rebel nature. I can't think of an instance of anyone of color on the show (EDIT: In Season One, a black character named Brodie appears, played by Chanmp Laidler, in the High Octane episode. List of The Dukes of Hazzard episodes ), but given what else they did for others, I presume that the entire Duke clan would stick up for them against whatever persecution anyone may have heaped upon them. That's the type of behavior from the Dukes that I expect to see in the 2005 movie. Val42 06:10, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
My suspicion is that the show's avoidance of racially charged themes is the only saving grace. There was some controversy IIRC, but it was mostly drowned out by the show's popularity and by the perception among many that the south was entitled to a few symbols and pride. -Lommer | talk 06:58, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
It's used a lot by bikers and Rock'N'Roll fans. It isn't a racist flag even though it might have been appropriated by some racists in the past. DavidFarmbrough 16:06, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Now there is. 71.229.9.202 14:55, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Cousin Countin' Game

The article makes the assumption that Bo, Luke, Daisy, Coy and Vance are all first cousins, when nothing in the show indicates that they are.

Response: No it doesn't. It suggests that people have been trying to figure out the "Duke name" question. Plus, the fact that they would have to be first cousins, as they are all named "Duke" AND they are all relatively the same age. The chances of one of Jesse Duke's siblings having a child-- who in turn had a child themself-- who would still be close to the age of Jesse's direct nieces or nephews, is completely illogical, if not impossible.

The only other option would be Jesse Duke's FATHER having a brother, who's lineage in turn consistently spawned boys, and then these very distant cousins all managed to come to Hazzard and live together.

--and yes, the similarity of the Dukes' ages, along with sharing their surname, is a heavy indicator in the show that they are first cousins. - ClintFord 20:43, 20 September, 2005 (CST)

Response: If Jesse came from a large family, and his age and locale makes it extremely possible, then his oldest siblings likely would be marrying and having children while his parents were still generating children. This is not an uncommon phenomenon. My father, the youngest of 10, is younger than three of his two eldest siblings' children. Thus I have first cousins who "feel" like aunts and uncles, and second cousins who "feel" like first cousins.

On my mother's side (who comes from a much smaller family, she's the oldest of three children. I can count off hand six second, third and fourth cousins who were born within 5 years of me.

My mother who is less than a year older than my father are fifth cousins. My mother has a different maiden name than a married name, but my maternal grandmother's maiden name and my last name are the same.

Such are the realities of rural life.

To confuse matters further, I seem to recall one particularly ominous and chilling episode where Boss Hogg confronts Luke and reveals the long-kept secret that he was his father. Wavy G 18:20, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Picture

Can anyone source a picture with copyrigt clearance? The current snap is scheduled for deletion and it's a very bad copy anyway, it doesn't do the show justice. DavidFarmbrough 16:06, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
I just did. It was the best picture I could find. I know the original was taken in color (I've seen it on a Hazzard documentary), but I can't find a copy of it. ClintFord 15:27, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
I think the color version is that seen here:Color pic of Dukes which is slightly different but taken at the same shoot. AIUI what they used to do when taking publicity pictures is to have two cameras, one with monochome film and one with color. The copy I've sourced here is too low resolution to be used on wikipedia, and it also has a logo on it. DavidFarmbrough 16:39, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

The General Lee - Robert E.Lee?

I have a theory which I hope you will indulge. Is General Lee after whom the car is named the same person as American Civil War hero Robert E Lee? If so, then I think this should be stated in the article (as it's interesting - to me anyway, who knows next to nothing about the US Civil War). DavidFarmbrough 09:18, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Your theory is correct: that's the general the car is referring too. I've added a sentence about the name under the "characters" section. Thanks for the suggestion. Turnstep 18:23, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Can someone please (other than me) please just START these pages? I hate it that Enos, Rosco, Boss and Daisy all have articles, but these three have nothing. I've tried twice to just start a page for Bo and Luke (with just a picture and a stub-- so others could begin expanding) but someone keeps deciding that's not enough, and removes my work and replaces the links with a "redirect" back to the Dukes of Hazzard main page. I simply don't have time to write a whole page for all three. However, I wouln't mind expanding on and improving the articles from time to time. There are already good pictures (with sources) for both Bo (Bo Duke.jpg) and Luke (Luke Duke.jpg) --(if those don't work, try an underscore between their first & last names.)

Thanks!

I will try and do Bo's page...I'll need some help though on the other ones... :-) Tvaughn05 02:41, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

I completed Bo and Lukes pages, however, I don't quite know what to put on Jesse Dukes's page. Tvaughn05 18:49, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I started the new Jesse Duke page. Hope it's fitting of such a great character... ClintFord 03:03, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Does anbody notice

The main characters are listed once under the "Main Characters" section, then (with the exception of Bo Duke and Luke Duke) repeated with more detail under the "Supporting Characters"? I can fix this, by simply removing the list without the details and changing the headers so that it actually reflects the "main" and "supporting" characters. Wavy G 02:41, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

It's fixed. Enjoy, world.

Pictures

We really need pictures of Ben Jones (as Cooter) and of Waylon. I posted a picture of Cooter that I thought was from a press kit, but apparently someone asked for it to be removed. This page is incomplete until those pictures are found. Can anyone help? ClintFord 14:36, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Jack Starett

Speaking of a recent edit to this page regarding who directed the show, I don't recall that Jack Starrett was ever that prolific of a Dukes director. He only directed a few episodes, to my knowledge. With no disrespect intended, I know there were several other directors who directed far more episodes than Mr. Starrett, and that list would include Dukes actors Tom Wopat, Sorrell Booke, James Best, Denver Pyle and John Schneider (the last episode). Someone needs to check out who the most prolific, notable directors were and then revise the article accordingly. The way it reads now, it seems as though Mr. Starrett directed every episode, and that just simply isn't the case. [[Briguy52748 22:16, 30 June 2006 (UTC)]]

Made a template

What do you think?

Looks good. BTW — you'll want to remember to sign your posts in the future with four tildes (~). Thanks! [[Briguy52748 18:28, 9 July 2006 (UTC)]] (P.S. History shows that Wavy G was the guy who created the template. If that's the case, please thank him!)

Thanks. I noticed there were a lot of stray "Dukes" articles out there, and many of them didn't link to the others, so I thought a template would be nice. I was afraid the orange would be a bit too much, but I totally wanted it to be orange in honour of The General. YEEHAAAA. Wavy G 19:13, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

One question about Rosco

I was wondering, was there ever a reason given in the series of why after the chases, Roscoe didn't simply go to the Duke farm to arrest the boys for resisting arrest?--kchishol1970 05:52, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Umm...because Rosco was stupid? Wavy G 06:16, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Three words: Willing suspension of disbelief SonPraises 03:52, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Rosco knew that if he went to the Duke Farm, the boys would pull some trick, jump in General Lee, and leave him with a mouthfull of dust.Cobra wwe 22:45, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Don't forget also that the show couldn't allow that to happen. In order for the episode to progress and develop, the Dukes boys had to escape and get caught at the necessary times, otherwise the episode would collapse. DavidB601 20:42, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

There's another, more logical reason in character, though part could be Rosco's stupidity :-) As it was, Boss Hogg was trying to frame them so much that the Dukes could also have easily sued him for wrongful imprisonment, etc.. Now, if Rosco were to go and arrest them on the farm, that might be seen as crossing the line, in their minds, and also provide better evidence if such a suit should occur. While it's true that Jesse & Boss Hogg were old moonshining buddies, Bo and Luke could easily sue Hogg, even if Jesse didn't want to. Boss Hogg had to know this (being so sneaky) and he could well have insisted Rosco never go out to arrest them becasue that would make it look worse if there ever was a suit. As to why they never sued, there are families that don't believe in that, and jesse may well have taught his niece and nephews it wasn't the right way to do business. (Yes, I know it also might not have worked on the local level, but the appeals process would be available, where they could hopefully get a judge who wasn't in on things.)DTF955 12:41, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

A lot of times he did go to the farm, only for the Duke boys to somehow evade capture. And also, remember, a lot of times the charges against the Duke boys were false and they proved themselves wrong by catching the real bad guys. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.94.219.5 (talk) 21:09, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Some good points; another one to consider is that generally by the end of an episode, the Dukes had outwitted Boss and Rosco's crooked "plot of the week", so for them to be arrested, they Dukes could easily blow the whistle and land Boss / Rosco in a whole lot of trouble. Of course, they could do that in the first place, but then we're back to suspension of disbelief for sake of the plot. I prefer to think of it as Boss walking away admitting defeat, determined to come back the next episode with a bigger, better plan. Jay Firestorm (talk) 22:47, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

I uploaded this image of Bach as Daisy, and it's currently used in this article, her's, and the character's. It's currently being challenged as without "source" information (obviously the copyright owner of the TV series) or evidence that it was a promo image. Can anyone more familiar with this topic help quell these pointless objections? Otherwise, it should be replaced with a screenshot of Daisy. Postdlf 16:36, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

I created this Dukes Wikipedia:Userbox. The code is {User:SonPraises/ubx/Dukes}}. I'm not entirely happy with it, but my userbox creation skills are limited, and it's better than not having one. Inclusion of the ubx on your user page will automatically include your username on the "People who liked the Dukes of Hazzard" page.

Characters section

Since nearly all the characters have their own separate article, and given the Wikipedia convention of listing only the character's name, and the actor's name, and a one or two word description of the character, this seems like a good place to condense the article. Vandalism

The TV series The Dukes of Hazzard followed Sierra and Heather Bennett, living in an unincorporated area of the fictional Hazzard County, Georgia, racing around in their modified 1969 Dodge Charger, The General Lee, evading corrupt Boss Hogg and his inept county sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane.

Who the hell are they?

Table of DVD releases

The article that this was split off to was listed under Afd, and since its likely a case of breaking out of a trivial section (WP:SPINOUT), I moved it back. I'm assuming this was done originally to reduce the length of the article, but I would suggest other ways of doing so, such as reducing the "Dukes of Hazzard References" section, and removing the unsourced material from the "cousing counting game" section. cheers! BoccobrockT 03:25, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Was Luke really older than Bo?

According to your article, Luke was supposed to be the "slightly older" cousin. I'm not sure if that's correct. It seems I remember one episode where Bo and Luke were having to break some bad news to Daisy, and Luke told Bo he should do it. When Bo asked why, Luke said, "You're older." Bo said, "Not much!" Luke said, "But enough!" I can't document that particular episode, though, so that's why I didn't change it in the article.

Luke was undeniably the smarter of the two, whether he was older or not.97.73.64.172 (talk) 02:34, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Continuity was never the strongest point in the series, but Luke was generally said to be the older cousin. In the seventh season episode "Happy Birthday, General Lee", which is told in flashback, it is said that Luke has just left highschool, while Bo is still there, indicating there's a year or so in age difference between the pair. Surely you can do better?

This page opens with the downer sentence, "The Dukes of Hazzard is a American television series that was made in California fruit groves but was supposed to be about the American South."

Wow. Is that how you're planning to summarize this entry? It sounds so cynical! Surely you can do better? Thanks. 68.126.4.123 (talk) 00:38, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Wallace Wilkinson

"Wallace Wilkinson, who played an FBI Agent in the second episode, would go on to become Governor of Kentucky."

Someone needs to check and make sure there aren't TWO Wallace Wilkinsons. The Wallace Wilkinson who became governor of Kentucky in 1987 was a longtime Kentucky businessman with no connection, as far as I know, to Hollywood or show business. Is it possible he was on DofH? I guess. But it doesn't seem very likely. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.29.165.122 (talk) 19:30, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

No, that really was the very same Wallace Wilkinson. I remember reading about it on a website with his bio (I forget where) and he did try a brief acting career (remember Ronald Reagan was an actor before going into politics also) before he went into the political arena.75.81.246.109 (talk) 21:10, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

"The Beginning": TV movie or straight to DVD?

The article says it is "a prequel to the original (and the first film) was a TV movie and also went straight to DVD release." If it was shown on TV first, that doesn't qualify as "straight to DVD" or ALL TV movies would be considered straight to DVD. Since there is no source for this sentence, I don't know in which direction to correct the statement. Wickedjacob (talk) 20:03, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Daisy's original car was a 1974 Road Runner (not a 1973)

I fixed this a couple months ago, and someone changed it back to 1973. First of all, the source given for the year of the car links to a 1974 Road Runner (I don't know who put in that source but they were right about the year). Second, that Daisy's car is a 1974 is evident simply by looking at it. A 1973 Road Runner had slits/vents in the back of the hood, by the windshield (i.e., the cowl area, as you can see here), while a 1974 Road Runner did not (which you can see in the linked source). Daisy's original Road Runner had no slits/vents in the hood.

Here is a screenshot from the first scene in which Daisy's Road Runner was featured, from the first episode of the series: "One Armed Bandits". As you can see, there are no vents in the back of the hood, i.e., it is a 1974. I'm changing it back to 1974 so that it will agree with the linked source, as well as agree with reality itself. – MaximRecoil (talk) 04:53, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Bo's clothing

Could "Bo usually wears a cream-yellow shirt; it is a stronger yellow in the first and second season, a lighter cream color from the third season, and in the sixth and seventh season has more of a grey hue to it. (The only break from this norm is in the second episode produced and broadcast, "Daisy's Song", where Bo wears a red shirt for much of the story, and a sequence in the fifth episode, "High Octane", where he wears a light blue shirt. Many early publicity shots show the character to be wearing a dark blue denim shirt.) For the first two seasons he wears a blue t-shirt underneath (brown in the first episode); this was slowly phased out during the third season" be split into a separate article so there's room to go into more detail? 87.254.76.55 (talk) 22:17, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
