Apprentice vs Student[edit]

While there's no direct english world for "Tu di", "apprentice" would fit better than "student". Since in wikipedia, student is defined as a learner from an "institution", where an apprentice learns sets of structured skills from a proffesional. The most correct english world could have been "Padawan learner" from Star wars, but we are not in star wars. Padawan learner is also described in wookieepedia as "Jedi apprentice". by the same analogy, the closest thing could be "Kungfu apprentice", therefore "apprentice" should be used.

orginal sentence - "He meets Chen Jinnan, the leader of the Heaven and Earth Society, an anti-government secret organisation, and becomes Chen's student." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dynima72 (talkcontribs) 05:09, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think "disciple" will be a better translation for "tu di". Apprentice reflects more that the learner is a novice, while student implies a fixed location for the school. Snowybeagle (talk) 02:07, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Towards the end of the novel, the protagonist Wei Xiaobao, an ethnic-Han with close ties ..."[edit]

While I am awed by this the author of this article's abilities to articulate these details, I do have a copy of another Jin Young novel (ISBN 962-8129-46-5) where Jin Yong himself noted (dated April, 2002) that he has not specified the ethnic origin of Wei Xiaobao's father. So he may as well be nothing more than half Han. Zubbus (talk) 13:03, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting observation. But I believe most people would rather assume that Wei Xiaobao is a Han Chinese than speculate about his ethnicity. Who knows, Jin Yong might be leaving this question to readers' imaginations, just as he did to the conclusion of Xue Shan Fei Hu. Lonelydarksky (talk) 13:33, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
