Not notable[edit]

This article should be speedily deleted as the individual is not remarkable nor significant enough to deserve attention or to be recorded (See WP:BIO). The depth of coverage of Temesgen is not substantial and he is not unique in being arrested in Ethiopia for critiquing the government as thousands have been arrested. Turtlewong (talk) 22:43, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please note this is not a WP:A7 candidate for speedy deletion as it sourced with WP:RS including Voice of America .Only stated if one wishes to delete it one to free to nominate it for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion hence removed speedy tag. Thanks. Will do. Turtlewong (talk) 23:24, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose speedy deletion: Desalegn is the editor of Feteh, a Wikipedia-notable newspaper, and he is considered notable by three different international organisations - Committee to Protect Journalists, Article 19 and Amnesty International - none of which are government organisations like VOA. The speedy deletion tag still seems to be in place, so I'll remove it. Boud (talk) 20:16, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy deletion tag was already removed by Pharaoh of the Wizards which is fair. You mistakenly removed the different proposal for deletion tag. Both Temesgen and his website are virtually unknown in Ethiopia and among its diaspora. Furthermore, he is not notable by standard Wikipedia conventions. "If reliable sources cover a person only in the context of a single event, and if that person otherwise remains, or is likely to remain, a low-profile individual, we should generally avoid having a biographical article on that individual" (WP:SUSTAINED). Just because he was briefly mentioned 5 years ago for being arrested and released does not make him notable in the eyes of those NGOs or among Ethiopians in general. Lastly, both Temesgen's article and Feteh were made by the same user Khazar2 so I don't think saying his small newspaper is Wikipedia-notable newspaper makes much sense. Object to proposed deletion (PROD). Wikipedia:Proposed deletion - "Proposed deletion (PROD) ... may only be placed on a page a single time. Any editor (including the article's creator or the file's uploader) may object to the deletion by simply removing the tag; this action permanently cancels the proposed deletion via PROD." I will now remove the PROD tag, as per the instruction visible in the article, which says, "You may remove this message if you improve the article or otherwise object to deletion for any reason." My reason for objecting is stated above: Temesgen is known both as an editor of a newspaper and internationally by human rights organisations. Boud (talk) 00:37, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • If you wish to try for a WP:AFD, then do that and a wider range of discussion and reasoning without an automatic 7-day deletion will take place. Boud (talk) 00:37, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments/counterarguments for possible AFD[edit]

  • The claim (above) that Temesgen is "virtually unknown in Ethiopia" is inconsistent with the sourced content of the article: the government knows so much about Temesgen that it prosecuted him for his journalism and imprisoned him. The Ethiopian government is part of Ethiopian society. So the sources say that Ethiopia (the state of Ethiopia, at least) considers Temesgen so important that 41 lawsuits were filed against him, he was imprisoned for three years, his newspaper was closed, and he was re-arrested in March 2018. Not everybody in country X is aware of all "notable" people of country X. Boud (talk) 01:37, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The claim that this is not long-term notability disagrees with the sources: Ethiopian sources reported on his liberation in 2017 and re-arrest in 2018. Boud (talk) 01:37, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notability tag removed since the article is updated with secondary sources[edit]

For notability, the article is updated with secondary sources such as reports by the U.S. Department of State, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and other news sources such as the CPJ and the VOA. Sections can certainly expand and the acquittal, charge, and sentencing details can further be elaborated. Petra0922 (talk) 13:36, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
