Untitled[edit]

Was this really the deadliest Shining Path attack to date? With all due respect, 24 dead sounds like the toll of a rather garden-variety highland massacre at the hands of the Shining Path (or the army). Of course, Tarata was felt much more by the political classes - it was a bombing (entirely against civilians) in a well-to-do commercial/residential district. I translated the main body of the article on this attack in the Spanish wikipedia. Some of the details in these sections contradict the current opening section; I don't know which account is correct. I don't know if this was the deadliest Shining Path attack. GreenRoot (talk) 21:55, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it to deadliest bombing to be more specific, but I'm not sure that's true. The Lucanamarca massacre was a much more deadly Shining Path attack against civilians. Of course the victims were dark skinned and didn't live in Lima, which, unfortunately, means that they didn't matter in the minds of many. --71.163.67.145 (talk) 01:43, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Claims in article[edit]

The article says "according to specialists,[4] it was the first time in the course of the civil war that "traditional" Lima society experienced the conflict. It was the first time that a terrorist act was carried out against a large-scale civilian target and the first direct attack on a city center." I'm not sure that such specialists are correct, and the fact that the citation is a broken URL doesn't help. I think you could easily argue that most of Lima had "experienced" the conflict that was raging around them for twelve years by the time the Tarata bombing took place, and it's not clear what "traditional" society is (I'm guessing that it means "rich"). Both the Shining Path and the Peruvian military had been targeting civilians for a very long time before this bombing occurred, and I'm not even sure that it was the first attack on a city center. For example, the Palacio de Gobierno had been attacked by the Shining Path, and Tarata was part of a bombing campaign in Miraflores. Also, what counts as a city? I'm sure the city of Ayacucho experienced terrorism before this particular bombing in Miraflores. --71.163.67.145 (talk) 01:50, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
