Sylvie Vartan was the first rock female singer in France. She remained the number one female singer in France during 25 years and is as popular in Japan, Italy, Spain, Germany... She has sold 40 millions copies records, has done 2000 covers around the world and more than anything is the number one stage performer in France, all her concerts from 1961 up to 2005 in the Palais des Congres (4000 seats) in 2005 has always been sold out ! In France she is the only one who have such popularity during the last 40 years which put her as a legend on the same level as Edith Piaf. She has been singing also in Las Vegas where Travolta, Gene kelly...came to see her, Atlantic City, Los Angeles. Back in the 7os , she was elected the most popular french woman of all time in front of political, sports..figures. Beautiful and talented, she an icon and her autobiography published in 2004 was a best-seller.

Mostly on referencing issues. Here are some things that need citations (there are lots more).

  • "In 1952, Dako Dakovski, a film director and father Georges' friend, offered Sylvie a role of a schoolgirl in the movie "Pod igoto". The film was about Bulgarian rebels against the Turkish occupation. Being a part of the film had a lasting impression on her and made her dream to become an entertainer."

  • "The artist's songs have been covered by David Hallyday, Patricia Kaas, Alain Souchon, Isabelle Boulay, Francis Cabrel, Axelle Red, Etienne Daho, Françoise Hardy, Lara Fabian, Lola Dutronic and the Wildside."
  • "In May 1969, at a concert in Teheran, Vartan encouraged the unknown Mike Brand to start a career in Paris."
  • "In 2005, the singer was appointed as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal and Child Health in the European Region."
  • Entire "Personal life" section.

Unfree image in infobox[edit]

Please stop vandalizing. As Wikipedia guidelines state, the purpose of an infobox is not merely showing, what a person looks like, but giving an overview on the topic. The videos of Sylvie Vartan's concerts at the Olympia of Paris are a substantial part of her legacy, which is discussed in the lead and the following sections in detail. Cover art is in place in the info box next to the lead section. More than a quarter of the photos used in the infoboxes of good articles about artists are licensed as fair use. Usage of cover art in infoboxes of good articles is a normal practice, including the Sex Pistols, Disco 2000 and Deborah Kerr. You seem to be as unfamiliar with Wikipedia's basic civility policy as you are with its non-free content policy. Deborah Kerr is deceased, and both The Sex Pistols and Disco 2000 have long ceased to exist. Sylvie Vartan however is very much alive (and even performing), and for living people the use of unfree images is not considered appropriate. (The cover of an album is considered appropriate in an article about that album, and screenshot from a film might be considered appropriate in an article about that film, but that is not an excuse to take such a cover or screenshot and use it anywhere where it comes handy. There are other unfree images in the article whose use is questionable, I only removed the most extreme one.)

Category 'Artistry'?[edit]

This category says almost exactly the same thing than the beginning of the introduction. I don't know exactly what is Wikipedia policy about that and I've noticed the same phenomenon in other articles but here, I really can't see any justification. It doesn't seem useful. According to Wikipedia policy about the lead section, the lead does not state any different facts, than the article, but is a concise overview on the topic. The point is, that the lead should give you the topic in a nutshell. Erikupoeg (talk) 13:40, 15 March 2008 (GMT)

Much improvement needed[edit]

There are tons of problems in this article, I don't have time myself to clean it up, so I just added a cleanup tag that I suggest remains until this article is completely Wiki-compliant, which will take some work. In the intro alone, there is POV (referenced, presumably the idea is the idea is that if it's written somewhere, it makes it fact, but citing a subjective opinion from an article still means it is subjective, ie POV), grammatical problems and and factual errors. Notably, Vartan was not the first female rock singer (or 'rock and rolling lady', as it is oddly put here) in France: I'm not sure who is credited to being the 'first' exactly, but e.g. Hedika and Nicole Paquin came earlier). And there is an instance of plagiarism, the phrase "energetic presence and impish cuteness" taken directly from the cited page, but not quoted (it's POV anyway). Skimming the article, I see these problems aren't confined to the intro, but continue, e.g. POV here: "No longer a timid young yéyé girl but a sexy dancer." I'm finding many yé-yé-related articles to lack credible sources, be full of embellishments and POV, and flouting multiple Wiki rules. I hope to see that change. I've cleaned the page from the embellishments you pointed out except for "no longer a timid young girl, but a sexy dancer"-phrase. For goodness sake, this is an article about a French sex symbol, not the President of Bulgaria! Sylvie Vartan's act did turn from a timid girl to a sexy dancer, and that's a certifiable fact. If there's anything else, just point it out, and I'll do something about it.User:Erikupoeg
It seems a tad contentious to state in the article, Sylvie Vartan and Johnny Hallyday were their generation's "golden couple" in France. Several sources (and it is my personal recollection from that time) would confer that title upon France Gall and Michel Berger. I am not biased, incidentally, being a big fan of both women, and it might have been a close run thing. However, the statement is hard to substantiate and is probably more a POV than a verifiable fact.Humboles (talk) 22:50, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ancestry[edit]

The cited source, a link to no less than Sylvie Vartan's official website, says nothing about her father being of Armenian descent. It does, however, say she was born in Bulgaria. Michael Vartan, Sylvie's nephew, states that his father, Sylvie's brother, is Bulgarian.

Until a reliable source is found that states the Vartans are, unequivocally, of Armenian descent, the encyclopedia article cannot include the information.Doctorqui (talk) 01:40, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some trolls have been putting a LOT of disinformation online (a hoax) about miscellaneous French stars being fromarmenia. Sylvie Vartan is White. Her ancestry is Bulgarian. Her grandfather briefly lived there for work and her father *might* have been born over there. He left for Bulgaria young, then for France. So if, at some point, he had dual nationality because of being born in that country where he has NO DNA from, no blood ties and no ancestors, that does not make Sylvie anything but a Bulgarian-French. This mean Bulgarian by DNA / ethnicity / blood (White race) and French by naturalization and culture. She has no ties to that middle eastern country, the same that Olivia De Havilland isn't Japanese-American but is White European descent American whose parents gave birth in Japan. I hope you understand the basic concept? Otherwise look up "naturalization". Your citizenship does not alter your ancestry or your DNA. The same and Victoria Principal isn't considered Japanese but is of Mexican ancestry. Where you are born only gives you privileges for that country but it doesn't transform your blood cells, your race nor your skin color. Again, a lot of online trolls (Kardashian fans) have been claiming many French stars to be from there. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hope we can put the nonsense to rest. EDIT: could someone please edit out the nonsense at bottom of page? "Bulgarian people of Armenian descent - French people of Armenian descent" This is INCORRECT and misleading. Wikipedia articles are based on reliable published sources, not on editors' weird personal theories about race, blood and DNA. If the statement doesn't reflect the cited sources, by all means change it to a version that does, but don't add original research to the article. Habib: There is nothing weird about pointing out that a piece of paper aka your "nationality" that is given to you by the country your mother happens to pop you out does not alter your biology, your genes, your blood, your skin color or your DNA and has nothing whatsoever to do with your skin color or your genes aka your *race*. Sylvie Vartan has confirmed on broadcast interviews (see French language Wikipedia for details) that her father and his father were Armenian, but denied that they had the surname "Vartanian," contrary to what was stated on English Wikipedia.
