Who calls the mentioned actors the Purchase Mafia. I've never heard the term before. Anyone got a source? PirateKeith 19:00, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

A little bit of miscellanea

It feels like there are a lot of missing holes in this Wiki. A well-sourced article on such a young college should list all the presidents the college ever had. It's only been about 50 years! Sheldon Grebstein wasn't mentioned and he was president for 12 years. https://www.nytimes.com/1993/06/20/nyregion/suny-chief-retires-proudly.html

There was no mention of the time that the students took over the Administration building, which in my opinion is a notable event. It's mentioned in the NYTimes article above though.

The Wiki mentioned the founding of the opera department in 1998. As a student and alumni I performed in operas in 1987 and beyond. All voice majors did, well before I got there as well.

There is no mention that the original grading system did not have grades. Instead, students received written reviews of their academic work. There was still some of that within the music department when I attended.

A dispute about the New Apartments and singles. The new apartments didn't have singles when they were first built. That came much later.

There is no mention of the tunnels beneath the mall. They were well used by students escaping the weather and for parties. They are reputed to exist not only for reasons of utility but because at the time of construction, there were concerns about campus protests. Major overhaul

Speaking as a recent graduate of SUNY Purchase, I'm really kind of disappointed to find the article in such a state. There were numerous biased statements promoting the college, making much of this more into an extension of the Purchase website than an independent unbiased source. A lot of the rest is common knowledge among students, but needs to be cited if it's going in here; other claims are patently ridiculous-- I know for a fact that there are singles in the New, I roomed next to one. I'm going to keep an eye on this, but anyone who can help source or attribute the more notable claims would have my grattitude. Lucky number 49 22:08, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Famous Alumni

This section is a bit messy. First, "famous" is subjective; I'm not sure most people would consider most women's rights activists or photojournalists very famous outside of those circles. A more proper title would be "Notable alumni," which would be similar to most other University-related articles. With that said, however, any person who is red-linked (i.e. does not have a Wikipedia article) often automatically fails the "Notable" requirement. I'd recommend axing all those names that you can't make a good argument for being notable and condense into one giant list with parenthetical indications of why they are notable. Get rid of the subsections by alumni "type" - it just makes everything more confusing (and makes the table of contents enormous). If people really like having categories for alumni, just do bold titles, not within the === signs as official subsections. School Colors

While the school has of late (within the past three years and no earlier by my observations, but that's OR and is irrelevant) been prominently using blue, orange, and white in athletics uniforms and other official displays, it has also been widely known among the students that the official school colors were [heliotrope] and [puce]. While there are several displays around the school which affirm this in text, a brief search has turned up only one reference to it on the official site. Unless someone can find a reliable reference unquestionably demonstrating that the official "school colors" have been changed along with the athletic colors, I recommend leaving both sets of colors. so sayeth Lucky Number 49 Yell at me! 15:57, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

I was going to ask something about including blue/orange/white as the athletic colours when I saw your above post. I do think it is important to include both sets of colours, but I do not see the athletic colours mentioned anywhere in the article. Having a close friend who plays for the Purchase tennis team, I know these are the athletic colours the college uses (and is increasingly using in other offical displays, as you say), however I need to find some sources to back this up. The School of the Arts

This reads as if the Theater and Film programs are more selective than the other school of arts. It is my understanding, that ALL the programs require a portfolio/audition for admission and the faculty from all the programs draw from the highest ranks of their professions. oppose. "Purchase College" seems like relatively recent nomenclature. Regardless of "official" presentations, I believe the common vernacular name for this institution is "SUNY Purchase". (See Lucky Number 49's comment of 2007 above, "...Speaking as a recent graduate of SUNY Purchase...".) I think including the SUNY designation in the title is important in immediately establishing the identity of the place. For anyone unfamiliar with the nys university system "Purchase College" sounds like a very small, private college, rather than a component of a very large university system. Commentary on Commentary

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Technical Direction/Production Management graduate of the Design/Technology Program, class of 2006. I've never edited a wiki-article before, and I'm not sure how to really do so. Below are a couple of points/comments I'd like to make:

- The list of notable alumni has massively shrank since last I looked, and is largely related to acting and directing. While this may be a list of people who are notable to the public at large, someone who is interested in Purchase college for a specific reason has been left out. People who are not necessarily famous to the public can be very famous to their industry. Lighting designers, production managers, shop owners, amongst other categories; these people being alumni of purchase is of great interest to the prospective students of the school. This also relates to the purchase mafia comment: Purchase, or at least D/T, has an incredibly strong alumni network. On a given project, there are likely to be many people involved, and at many levels and departments, from Purchase. Limiting the notable alumni list is a disservice to any prospective student trying to find out about the school, and decide if they wish to attend.

- My name appears on the list of notable Designers/Technicians. It is linked to the founder of the O'Reilly publishing company. He did NOT attend SUNY Purchase. And while my name IS Tim O'Reilly, and I did attend SUNY Purchase, I don't feel that my name should appear on the same list as Tony award winning designers. If someone who is more wiki-savy than I reads this and feels the inclination, it would be appreciated if this was corrected.

In conclusion, I feel that the SUNY Purchase wiki article was greatly curtailed by individuals not familiar with the school or it's reputation, both good and bad. Any major revision or removal of a section should probably be left up to individuals who are in some way affiliated with that specific aspect of the school. My, and my classmates' experience in D/T, and judgment thereof, is unrelated to the experience of say, Dancers, or Psychologists. If this article is to be of use to someone looking for information on SUNY Purchase, it will have to be fleshed out by people who were, or are, involved.

User:Sphilbrick: I strongly suspect that all of these photos, and most of the photos at Category:SUNY Purchase are not free. Some have an OTRS ticket that I can't view, but others seem to be hastily uploaded under a general CC license with the author listed as numerous individuals, and no 'own work' or otherwise an indication of where this has been published under such a license. In any case, the photos are too good, the user only uploads these SUNY Purchase photos and can't seem to spell very well (e.g. "arial"), and they've uploaded several duplicate images.
