Untitled

A link to his NY Times Obit which contains a lot of historical info on him which could be added to the bio. He died after a long illness and there is a suggestion that he was demented at the end, so I really doubt if he physically died in any Woods Hole lab. SBHarris 23:35, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

The link for Baird's ratsnake needs to be either put in as such, or as Elaphe bairdi. The Pantherophis designation is not commonly accepted, and this is notated in the article on the species.

I would fix it myself if I didn't think I'd screw it up. 75.176.108.7 (talk) 13:35, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Tense consistency

The rewrite of this article substantially improved it, but while reviewing it I noticed that it uses the past future tense ("He would teach natural history at Dickinson starting in 1845") quite frequently, sometimes mixing it with the simple past tense. I find the use of the past future tense awkward in many cases ("would" generally implies a conditional), and I'd like to change it where worthwhile to the simple past tense. I started doing this on a quick sweep of the article, changing for example "He would die of cholera when Baird was ten years old" to "He died of cholera when Baird was ten years old"—but there are probably some points where the use of that tense would be worthwhile, so I stopped, saved, and came here. I can see using it to achieve a certain voice, but it seems like it could be scaled back. Are there reasons for keeping most or some of the uses of the past future tense, or should I generally convert them to the simple past tense?
