This is my first time commenting on a Wiki page and I'm not sure at all if I'm doing this correctly so please forgive any mistakes I've made. I'd like to bring to your attention a passage on the Smoky Dawson page that we believe to be incorrect.

"In June that year Dawson and Dot travelled to the US where he recorded and played at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville."

The underlined passage referencing the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville I believe is incorrect and needs to be corrected on the following grounds: (1) There is no form of evidence to be found that Smoky Dawson ever played at the Grand Ole Opry. (2) In his autobiography, Smoky Dawson – A Life, published in 1985, Smoky deals at length with his time in the United States in 1951 (Chapter VI, Pages 155-178). Nowhere in this extensive passage does he mention anything as prestigious and notable as being an Australian artist invited to appear at the Opry (he would have been the first). (3) The question of his performances have been brought to the attention of two of the most important people in the Australian country music industry: Mr Max Ellis, a pillar of the Country Music Association of Australia and pioneer of the Tamworth Country Music Festival; and Mr Nick Erby, who is regarded as the pre-eminent country music radio broadcaster in the nation. Both men were close friends, associates and supporters of Smoky for several decades, and both dispute that Smoky ever played at the Opry – they have never heard of that happening.

In view of these facts, we therefore request the correction of the statement as soon as possible.

Thanks very much for the note; I've gone and fixed it. I know nothing about this subject but I've only been going round fixing links to an old "Australian biography" website, which contained an extensive interview with him. I searched it for "Opry" and found an anecdote about how he almost made it onto Louisiana Hayride before he had a car crash, so I've replaced the offending text with that. The incorrect information had been there since the article's creation in March 2006 ... and also made it to the Finnish Wikipedia article about him, where I'm trying to get it corrected as well (link in English). As I said there, it seems that it's basically like saying that a sportsperson whose biggest achievement in reality was winning a provincial championship won an Olympic gold medal. For very egregious errors like this, you'd probably get a faster response at the Australian Wikipedians' notice board. Graham87 11:28, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
