How is sisal generally pronounced in English? It looks like a short i, sis-al but perhaps its see-sal, closer to a Spanish pronunciation than typical English? Cuvtixo 14:19, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Production[edit]

I have little to no knowledge about sisal, but I fixed some of the language on this page. It still needs more before I feel I can remove the Cleanup tag. The article includes the sentence

Products made from sisal are being developed rapidly, such as furniture and wall tiles made of resonated sisal.

Synthetic : artificial fibres - man-made cellulosics[edit]

I think the table of fibre types at the bottom of the page needs attention, but I do not have sufficient knowledge to do it. Rayon (like viscose) is not generally classified as synthetic - it is one of the artficial or man-made cellulosic fibres. Wording, verification of facts[edit]

I read the following line and found it to be unclear:

"Superior quality sisal is found in East Africa, once washed and decorticated."

Plant Description[edit]

Plant decription seems wrong to me. Even on the wiki page, flowers are shown but there is no connection between them, their stalk and the description. I don't know if the stalk (I don't know the technical term) only exists while flowering or all the time. Surely,a minimally acceptable description should include this. Here is what I suggest (I wonder if the Spanish Language page is better?): Height of plant, diameter of 'trunk'. Length, width and thickness of leaves (typical), diameter of plant from leaf tip to leaf tip, height of stalk, brief description of flowers, differences between cultivated and wild plant (if there is any). I saw several blurry photographs of a plant with the stalk and flowers which seem to be well over 10 (maybe even 20) feet tall. The description as is is unclear whether the length is of a leaf or the plant's height. So, edit that sentence to clarify, add description of plant's flower/stalk, and get a photograph of same.216.96.76.190 (talk) 20:20, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, BTW, I just read the wikipedia article on the Agave Tequilana (sp?) and it states that the stalk grows starting at age 5 yr. and the plant flowers, seeds and dies. It also states that in cultivation, the stalk is removed so that the (7-10 year) life is extended, and that they use stalk to start a new plant agriculturally.
