In 1955 this airfield was Royal Air Force Shaibah which the United Kingdom Government was in the process of handing to the Royal Iraqi Air Force. It had been so since the Second World War.

The writer was stationed there in 1955 whilst serving his National Service period under the command of a Group Captain. At the time no Aircraft Squadron was based there.{{Infobox military structure
