Name translation[edit]

Have anyone come across the name translation of "Shabbona" other than the "built strong like a bear" or "built like a bear" as neither "strong" (zongen/zong’-) nor "bear" (mko/-ko) is found in his name. With that name translation, I would have expected the name to look more like Zongko (Oj: Zoongikwa), but all the recorded spelling variations are rather consistent with the "Shaw-bo-neh" pronunciation, which means the recorded name translation is in error or only part of the name was recorded, causing a mismatch between the recorded Anishinaabe name and the recorded translation of the Anishinabe name. I haven't seen any other translation, multiple references to the built like bear name but no other. I don't think inserting "supposedly" is a very good tactic, and probably a bit too OR-esque, I'd be more comfortable just removing the sentence entirely than I would making personal judgment calls about it, regardless of the knowledge possessed on said topic.IvoShandor (talk) 12:14, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yea, I will keep my eyes open for any other references. IvoShandor (talk) 12:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Edited "which supposedly means" to "which was recorded to mean" as this will shift the emphasis from what the name means to how it was recorded. CJLippert (talk) 16:54, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, hope I wasn't too harsh.IvoShandor (talk) 17:12, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Remove" is harsh, but not mentioning the name evicerates expectations as well. I think the shift in focus was a much better solution to address the verifiability. On my end, I will scope through what I can find in oral histories to see if there are any clues from that end. CJLippert (talk) 17:21, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
