merge with messiah[edit]

I really think this article should be merged with the main Messiah (Handel) article as a subsection. It will never be very long and would work well as a subsection over there. Any dissent? Fred 16:10, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Only that the Messiah article is already quite long without this, and if people do feel inclined to add information about notable Scratch Messiahs there may be pressure not to include it in the main article. Also, the main article doesn't say much about serious performances (main recordings, famous concert-hall productions) so that highlighting the nonsense version there could give the impression this is the normal mode. I'm inclined to expand the Messiah article such that it's not such an issue of balance. I think that because Messiah has such a great amateur performance tradition -- and thus is an important part of the life of the work -- it makes sense to include this information in the article itself. Or maybe to have a subheading in the main article that links to this one better than the arrangement that we have now. Well, I fond the separate page useful, I do think that Messiah sings are a cultural mem which is interesting. Would be nice to have a list of regular ones. Scratch Messiah and Scratch Orchestra[edit]

At present the article states, though without citing a source: "The name should by no means be confused with the experimental scratch orchestra tradition, but rather derives from the idea of cooking from scratch." Having read what Wikipedia says about scratch orchestras, I imagine it is very plausible indeed that the term "Scratch Messiah" was taken from there. Of course, both probably go back ultimately to the idea of doing something (but why cooking?)
