Cats

Would Wikipedians entertain the idea of having the Councils-by-state sections recategorized to "Scouting in Arizona", "Scouting in Washington", and so on, rather than a list of every council and district? The reason I would like this considered is

1) no other country's Scouting articles are divided into such minute details (except for The Scout Association of Hong Kong, and really, is that much minutiae important or interesting to the reader?)

2) many councils that a reader may choose to look up, like the Fitchburg Area Council of Massachusetts or the Vigilante Area Council of Montana, went extinct 30+ years ago, yet may be of interest in a more state-based article

3) many states like Alaska share a communal Scout history, only fairly recently being broken into smaller councils, others like North Dakota had several merged into one, and some Scouting histories are better told encompassing an entire state. The fact that Scouts in California prior to the charter of the BSA were the youth arm of the California Highway Patrol, or the fact that Connecticut, while having only eight counties, has had 22 councils over the course of its history, would be well-included in a statewide article

Listing of Individual Units

Seems like the listing of units makes this article less readable. With only 1) Pennsylvania Dutch Council Harvest District and 2) Bucks County Lenape District listing it is also incomplete and not reliable. I suggest that all references to individual units be stricken. Any thoughts? Mitico 01:02, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

What then would you say to the creation of a larger York-Adams Area Council article out of this article, as per the WikiProject Scouting guidelines on sub-council entities? You're right, there is so much stuff on the northeast councils that it will make the state articles too large, but they really need to be council level rather than by camp or lodge. The only really good ones, though, are Cradle of Liberty Council and Chester County Council, all others have been or are stubs, and we really want to avoid 400+ council articles.     • The troop is notable, please send me a list of troops over 90 years that have been chartered every single year. (Most 'old' troops went through charter laspes during the 40's and 80's) We have actively and notably served the community all those years. We operate our own camp and (not to toot our horn) we are the envy of every troop in the area. We have over 30 active scouts and over 30 active adults. (1:1 scout to adult) We've been chartered by Christ Lutheran Church now for 60 years and were sponsored by the group of citizens before that. I know individual troops are not to have their own page, but we are an exception to this. Along with the volunteer fire company, Troop #1 also helps identify the community of Oreland. I am not promoting the troop here, we have our own website to do that. I feel that the troop deserves to be recognized here. Thank you.Jmpenzone 18:00, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

    • Oppose Regarding meeting the wiki notability standards, this troop has received ample coverage over the years in media such as the Springfield Sun and other media covering its regular meeting place as well as that covering the location of Hawk Mountain Camp. If anything, the article needs citations rather than being merged into a larger article. The troop is clearly notable, being one of the oldest in the nation and one of only a handful to operate its own camp, providing it with a rich and interesting history that few other troops match. Clearly information about this troop's history would be inappropriate and out of place in a broader article. The guidelines, after all, are just guidelines and not hard and fast rules, which allows for flexibility in cases like these. Laurel Highlands Council

Pittsburgh, April 28, 2011 - The Greater Pittsburgh Council-Boy Scouts of America announced today it will merge with the Penn’s Woods Council to form the new Laurel Highlands Council pending the approval of B.S.A. national headquarters. The combined council will now qualify as a Tier 100 council and will be headquartered in Pittsburgh ’s Flag Plaza but will maintain an office and Scout store in Ebensburg , PA.
