This is the first I've heard that the currently available trilogy version is significantly shorter than the original three books. If this is the case do we know if this is related to a reduction in type size or some other typographical change - or have pages actually been cut?

A friend of mine who is a big RAW fan says there were a number of differences between the separate books and the omnibus, to the point where he recommends considering the three separate volumes and the omnibus as different works. I don't know any details other than that, having never read this myself. There were some changes made when the three Illuminatus books were combined into that omnibus, but I think that was just a case of deleting some recaps and the like. The changes are *significant*. I came here looking for more info on this -- I just bought the omnibus as a replacement for my set of the original trilogy and noticed how much material was missing. It is not just deleting recaps. Much of the material that was cut appears to be the "meta" stuff (chapters discussing The Universe Next Door as if it was an artifact from the past, bits about Joe Malik the author writing a book in which the author Robert Anton Wilson writes a book, notes between the publishers discussing whether they are inside or outside of the novel), but entire chapters are gone that have nothing to do with those topics, too. Lots, if not all, of the explicit sex scenes are missing from The Trick Top Hat (which makes no sense since the ones in The Universe Next Door were left untouched). Many of the quotes above the chapters have changed. Many chapters end earlier than in the original book, often skipping a few paragraphs and sometimes losing entire pages. In a quick side-by-side comparison I found passages missing on almost every page. The more upsetting thing is that nowhere does the omnibus mention the significant amount of editing between versions. What The Potter-Stewart are you talking about?[edit]

Wilson did not use the names of Supreme Court Justices (and also those of prominent feminists - Kate Millet's surname is substituted for 'orgasm', for example) in order to avoid a lawsuit - he specifically claimed to have used the names of people who had claimed that particular words were in themselves offensive, on the logic that they could hardly find their own names offensive. 203.212.133.156 (talk) 10:28, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
