Platinum certification[edit]

To the editors who keep changing the certification of the album to "platinum" from "gold"... Personally I believe Salute may well have sold enough copies (300,000) to achieve platinum status. However, this is NOT the same as actually receiving a platinum certification: these are given out solely by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and at the request of the record company. In short, if the album is not listed as a platinum certification by searching the awards database on the BPI's website, it doesn't qualify as a platinum album, sorry. I appreciate that several gossip blogs have called the album platinum, and the Twitter account of Duvall, one of the record's producers, also has a cryptic tweet saying "platinum", but it isn't clear whether he is referring to just the one song he produced ("Move") or the whole album, or to just UK sales or combined worldwide sales. In any case, none of these sources meet WP:RS, in particular WP:UGC, so cannot be used as references: the only valid source is the BPI. Richard3120 (talk) 04:29, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Christianofficial, you are not following what I wrote above. Selling enough to be certified platinum, and ACTUALLY being certified platinum, are not the same thing. The certification MUST come from the BPI, and it is not as yet listed on their website. As for seeing the plaque, I assume you are referring to the tweet from IAmDuvall – I have seen that picture too, and as I said above, that is not proof of a platinum certification: he does not say specifically that it is for the album, or that it is for UK sales only. And if you read WP:UGC, you will see that Twitter is not considered an acceptable source for Wikipedia, so it can't be used anyway. Richard3120 (talk) 14:19, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note to add that if you look at the platinum plaque shown here in the tweet, there is no UK flag in the plaque. Google BPI platinum plaque and you'd see that British certification has a British flag or BPI clearly stated - see here. What's shown in the picture is therefore likely not a British BPI certification plaque. (And for that matter, the sales figure given 533,000 is too high to be for British album sales.)
