Namesake[edit]

So far I found no reference directly confirming the namesake for Tokomaru. It could be the New Zealand town or the Maori oceangoing canoe. Many early Shaw Savill steamers shared names with such canoes, Arawa (with no NZ place), Tainui, Māmari (no place), Matatua (no place), Tokomaru, Aotea. Other names chosen are mainly Maori words for peoples and some geographical places. However, Brank Bowen in "The flag of the Southern Cross: the history of Shaw Savill & Albion Co. Limited, 1858-1939", and published by the company, specifically notes (p.57 [1]) that their first two steamers Arawa and Tainui were "the legendary names for two of the principal canoes which had carried the Maoris to New Zealand in the fourteenth century migration. Other names from this fleet of canoes appeared later in the Shaw Savill list." I had originally linked to the dab page Tokomaru, but I think the Bowen quote is enough to indicate strong likelihood. Not that I know of (apart from buying a subscription, or finding a library that has an open access - or the original newspapers). However it is possible that some of these references can be replaced by more easily accessible ones from books that I don't have, or other online sources.
