Base this on piece in Latest Art and artist's sparse website. Have referenced Latest Art feature on women's art in Women Artists already. Wimmin 11:07, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the wording from the magazine - it is also on Rix's website:

Phenomenal Women

30 of the most exciting and groundbreaking female artists in the world.

Tracey Emin, Frida Kahlo,Diane Arbus, Barbara Hepworth, and 26 more art-breakers

They’re not muses, they’re not models, they’re not nudes – they’re some of the best artists in the world. Here, in no particular order, are thirty women who should be on everyone’s lips.

RUTH RIX (b.1942)

Ruth Rix, Phoenix Studios, Brighton. Born Leamington Spa 1942 to Jewish refugees. Trained Central and Leeds.

Oil on canvas; mixed media on paper. Influences include Bill Viola, Tarkovsky, Tapies. Themes: often staircases, landings, shifting rooms and spaces; figures sometimes present, often absent, leaving only resonances.

Great-niece of Austria’s grand dame of letters Ilse Aichinger; grew up in the company of Anna Mahler, Elias Canetti etc; 2 Years in Fritz Wotruba's studio in Vienna. Patrons are heavyweight, longstanding, discerning and very private.

Why isn't her work in the Tate and why isn’t she famous? Too busy exploring and painting to seek the limelight.
