Date of Death[edit]

The DNB has the date of his death incorrectly as 10th August 1978. 28th August 1978 is confirmed by the obituary in The Times. DNB notified (third such error found where Wikipedia was correct!). --jmb 15:07, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The date of death was actually August 27. The obituary appeared on the 28th. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.142.52.18 (talk) 21:18, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All refs now say he died on 28 August. Do you know different? -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 21:14, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Shaw's writing credits[edit]

Robert Shaw also wrote at least one play for television. I can't remember the title or who was in it, but it was the story of two allied airmen being held in a cellar in Germany by a civilian named Frick who pretended to be hiding them but was in fact keeping them as pets. It aired sometime in the sixties.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.110.14.105 (talk) 12:26, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're probably thinking of a novel "The Hiding Place," adapted for "Playhouse 90" in 1960, and "Situation Hopeless ... But Not Serious" (source: IMDb). David Spalding TalkContribs 17:46, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Yes, this is correct!—Preceding unsigned comment added by Irshgrl500 (talkcontribs) 09:29, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Donald Grant.jpg[edit]

Image:Donald Grant.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 05:57, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled[edit]

Prior to 6/7/08, the changes made to Shaw's biography are incorrect, and unverifiable! The contributor who made the comment about Shaw becoming ill during the filming of Avalanche Express, thus, leading to his heart attack, referenced absolutely NO source for this information. Shaw was not ill, prior to his heart attack and in fact, his death came as a shock to his family. Also, a contributor stated Shaw was driving with his wife, Virginia and eldest son Thomas, prior to stopping his car and stepping out of his vehicle, trying to walk off his shortness of breath and chest pains. Thomas is and was Shaw's YOUNGEST son. The best written, reliable sources on Shaw's biography are: "Robert Shaw: More Than a Life. By Karen Carmean and Georg Gaston; Copyright 1994, Published by Madison Books" and Suzy Avon's web page, "http://www.robertshaw-forallseasons.com". Both the authors of Shaw's biography "Robert Shaw: More Than a Life", and Suzy Avon, have been contacted and PRAISED by Shaw's children for the research and accuracy which the authors and Suzy have completed and conveyed about their father's life. I am sure Carmean & Gaston's biography and Suzy's web page will prove very reliable and useful to everyone, when making future contributions to Shaw's Wiki page. I was just wondering if someone would be so kind as to once again list the link to my website; http://www.robertshaw-forallseasons.com as it seems to have been removed. I can assure you, it's non-profit and for educational purposes only and so many fans seem to enjoy it. I hope you can do this if it's not too much trouble. Thank you kindly in advance. Image copyright problem with File:KlebbtestsGrant.jpg[edit]

The image File:KlebbtestsGrant.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Shaw's birth[edit]

I've removed the unreferenced detail that Shaw was born 'on King Street...'. This implies that Shaw was born 'on' the street itself. For all I know this may well have been the case (it does happen), but if so, we need a reference for it. Welham66 (talk) 14:20, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Film of The Battle Of Britain[edit]

Shaw was also in this. But then so was everyone else. SmokeyTheCat 15:55, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alcoholism[edit]

The article needs to mention the fact that Shaw was famously an alcoholic, as that was what caused his early death. (92.7.2.224 (talk) 12:59, 2 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Sure. It just needs to be strongly sourced, not from a personal, private website. Span (talk) 22:12, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. If it was both a "famous" part of his life and also the reported cause of death, it should not be hard to find reliable independent sources to confirm the information for inclusion in the article. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 23:24, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Shaw himself openly admitted he was an alcoholic, just as his father was. (92.7.28.5 (talk) 19:23, 3 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Please feel free to add the info to the article supported by a strong source. Span (talk) 19:53, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Buccaneers[edit]

It was around about the second or third episode of "The Buccaneers" that Robert Shaw makes an appearance as "Dan Tempest".AT Kunene (talk) 15:13, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

– The English actor was a major figure who could be, arguably, positioned as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. The only reason for the addition of "British" in his qualifier appears to be competition from an obscure performer, Bob Shaw (American actor), who is listed under his birth name, Robert Gottschall, at Find a Grave. The American was a bit player who went uncredited throughout the majority of his film appearances. Upon the few occasions that he did receive very minor billing, it was "Bob Shaw", "Robert Gottschall" and, on five occasions, between 1939 and 1945, had bit parts in which he was billed as "Robert Shaw". In his final bit part appearances, in 1980 and 1983, he was billed as "Robert Gottschall". —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 00:55, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support... would even be okay if with WP:PRIMARYTOPIC as mentioned. Thanks, Roman, for the well researched background info. It really helps makes a decision here. Jason Quinn (talk) 07:44, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support moving the British actor to Robert Shaw, and moving the dab page to Robert Shaw (disambiguation). Despite the fact that he died nearly four decades ago, he still receives over 73% of the page views;[1] the next runner up, Robert Gould Shaw, is rarely known without his middle name.[2]--Cúchullain t/c 15:45, 23 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

– Since the Robert Shaw disambiguation page lists 34 men, there has been, most likely, reluctance to propose one of them as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. However, nearly four years ago, a partially-related Talk:Robert Shaw (actor)#Requested move 15 August 2017 above, suggested the possible existence of sufficient support for such a nomination. Thus, for the record, let us establish consensus. — Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 02:26, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: That's not a very strong argument in favour of the proposal. — BarrelProof (talk) 04:43, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The nomination is structured so that each !vote represents a personal evaluation. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 05:10, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Leaning support!: I see. This actor is very well known and certainly the most highly viewed topic among the possibilities. The others that are viewed relatively frequently are generally known by a somewhat different name. The remainders seem relatively obscure. There is also a small WP:INCDAB issue for the actor. — BarrelProof (talk) 11:01, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose There are so many different entries, that it's hard for me to pick one as PRIMARYTOPIC even though the actor has much more pageviews than the next candidate.--Ortizesp (talk) 13:52, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. I'm not going to do the precise maths, but massviews over "all time" [3] show that the actor's article is the most popular but it is not clear that it has more views than everything else put together (the criterion for WP:PRIMARYTOPIC by usage). Of course there might be a separate notability argument. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 07:48, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
