Racial Description[edit]

While I'm sure its fascinating that Quaresma is of Gypsy heritage, why is it considered so important as to be in the opening paragraph? He's primarily known for being a footballer, not for being a Gypsy. An article about Jose Mourinho wouldnt start "Hes a football manager and a well known Muslim" because it isnt relevant to the article at all. And hes probably not a Muslim anyway... I'm sure when I read his page a few days ago it mentioned him winning the Bidone d’Oro (the golden bin). Why has this been removed?

This is a genuine award that he has won, which even has it's own wikipedia article to reference:

Romani descent category[edit]

There's a category (Category:Portuguese people of Romani descent) where this article would fit perfectly if Wikipedia were like in the beginning of the project. Not now while it remains in a complete state of disarray. Aarfrunzindin (talk) 02:57, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was sub-category of the other Romani-related categories, that is why i removed it. But i have now reverted myself, and started a discussion here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#Categories_(and_sub_ones)). To my understanding, "Portuguese Romani people" is for people like Quaresma who are members of the community, while "Portuguese people of Romani descent" would be for people whose ancestors were in the community but they themselves are not. Similarly, the England World Cup winner George Cohen - a Christian whose Jewish heritage was remote despite the surname - is categorised as "Category:English people of Jewish descent", while there is the Category:English Jews for people who still pratice Judaism or identify with being Jewish. 84.69.107.20 (talk) 16:46, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
