Science Communications Assignment[edit]

I’m Chloe Foo, a final year Biochemist at Imperial College London. I will be editing this Wikipedia article as part of my Science Communications module. I intend to add detail to the concepts already discussed in the current article, and broaden the included information, particularly regarding the different pathways of free radical generation in the Respiratory Burst. I will also include my own figures to summarise and better visualise the material. Chloefooey (talk) 01:18, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edits[edit]

I am currently restructuring and rephrasing sentences, as well as adding more detail. I am likely to remove the detail about plants as that information is more relevant to the Reactive Oxygen Species Wikipedia article and is weakly linked to the Respiratory Burst. Chloefooey (talk) 01:18, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I added the appropriate reactions for generation of relevant reactive oxygen or nitrogen species, and have removed the information linked to the functions of these species in vascular dilation etc. as I do not believe that it is relevant to this article. Chloefooey (talk) 01:18, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have added references, subsections and subtitles to the article. I have also inserted my own figure depicting the pathways in ROS & RNS generation during the respiratory burst. The plant material removed before has been reinserted, and I will further review it to assess if the link between the content and the topic at hand can be strengthened. I plan to include some information on degranulation during the respiratory burst. I may also touch on respiratory burst & phagocytosis versus NETosis, but this is yet to be confirmed. I have added a subsection on fertilisation to expand on what was touched on in the brief introduction prior to the commencement of my edit. I also intend to add a section on oxidative burst in cell signalling, and to refine the ‘In plants’ subsection. Chloefooey (talk) 13:01, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Added the cell signalling section. May add information on ROS in disease. Still yet to refine the plants subsection. Chloefooey (talk) 17:34, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have just put in information on cancer cells and their manipulation of oxidative burst for their continuous cell growth etc. Chloefooey (talk) 19:08, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The ‘in plants’ section has now been edited. I will now make general refinements to the article. Chloefooey (talk) 20:25, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have reviewed the edited article and made minor changes such as restructuring of sentences and replacing some words. Chloefooey (talk) 00:57, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

@Chloefooey: I'm sorry to have to drop by and say this, but it is not really acceptable to add content and then ask around for people to find references to support it. This suggests you've simply added content based upon what you've learned in lectures. As a third year student, you should know better than that. 'Cite sources to support content, or don't add the content' is a good approach to take - especially on technical subjects. Wikipedia also asks editors to explain each edit with a clear WP:EDITSUMMARY, and your omission in every edit you've made is not helpful either - especially where you've removed an entire section of cited content on this process occurring in plants. As we're none of us mind-readers, please could you explain your reasoning for that deletion here, please? (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Is it an error that you state your assignment ended in March 2019, not 2020? Without the inclusion of a timestamp, which four tildes inserts for you, we all end up a bit confused as to when you're editing and commenting.) Many thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 00:27, 12 March 2020 (UTC)  [reply]
@Nick Moyes: I mentioned that I am in the process of adding references, and would appreciate help if any - however your point is noted and I will source the information added myself. I briefly mentioned in the section above that I removed the plant content as I did not believe that it implicated the respiratory burst, but rather, free radicals. I have just re-included said information for later review on relevance. As this is my first time editing a Wikipedia article, I was not aware that I had to explain my edits in the WP:EDITSUMMARY and had simply explained myself in the Talk page. I will include explanations of further edits in the WP:EDITSUMMARY from here on. Your feedback is appreciated. Thanks, Chloefooey (talk) 01:40, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
