Puntland[edit]

@Chipmunkdavis: Explain how you perceived my edits as pointy and pov-pushing? Just thought maybe we should take this to the talk page to solve this little misunderstanding. Dabaqabad (talk) 09:41, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The mention of Somalia in relation to Puntland is an unnecessary addition that reads as clearly aimed to promote a distinction in this regard between Puntland and Somaliland. It doesn't help the reader understand the Regions of Somaliland, and without it the text remains perfectly clear without taking a particular side, which is quite a useful thing. CMD (talk) 09:48, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps using the official name of the state, Puntland State of Somalia, per their constitution [1] solves this?
I would also suggest rewording the dispute description, Puntland claims only parts of Sanaag (Badhan district) and Togdheer (Buuhoodle district), not whole regions, again per constitution: "Puntland consists of the Regions of Bari, Nugaal, Sool, South Togdheer (Buuhoodle district), Mudug (save for Hobyo and Haradheeere) and Sanaag (save for Ceelafweyn and Northwest Ceerigaabo District)."--Kzl55 (talk) 10:28, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Chipmunkdavis: Puntland is a federal member state of Somalia and has claimed to be so as well, which is different from Somaliland which is a de facto independent country. All I've been doing is following what Puntland itself has claimed, which is to be an autonomous state within Somalia, per its constitution. There is no pov pushing going on. Pov pushing would be me adding "autonomous Puntland state of the neighbouring country of Somalia", which is clearly pov pushing.

Then is the fact that my addition is neutral since it suits both point of views; for a pro-Somaliland reader it'll imply that Somalia is a neighbouring country while for a pro-Somalia reader it'll imply that it is another autonomous region that borders it. Normally Somali politics-related articles get endlessly vandalised by vandals using IPs but the fact that this section has stayed up for a while and has not been changed one bit proves its successful neutrality. Dabaqabad (talk) 10:37, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, that is not how the addition reads. If it was just another autonomous region, there would be no need to say "in Somalia". Regarding the rest, the text was changed in your edit in 20 April, which explicitly said "in neighbouring Somalia" (ie. not a long time ago, and has indeed changed a bit). CMD (talk) 11:21, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

While you do have a point when it comes to the "changed one bit" part, my point still stands.

"Regions are claimed by the neighbouring autonomous Puntland region in Somalia" can be interpreted in many ways depending on which side of the whole Somaliland issue you are on. For someone who's pro-Somaliland, that line can be interpreted as "Regions are claimed by the neighbouring autonomous Puntland region in [neighbouring] Somalia" while someone who supports Somalia's claim might interpret it as "Regions are claimed by the neighbouring autonomous Puntland region [also inside] Somalia".

Removal of the phrase "in Somalia" would imply that both Somaliland and Puntland are equal autonomous regions which would be very misleading for reasons we both know. Dabaqabad (talk) 11:29, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There's lots of ways wording could be interpreted if you push it far enough, but what is important is the more likely interpretation by someone who is unfamiliar with the subject at hand. Those who are unfamiliar are not going to read the text lacking "in Somalia" and think "I guess that mentioning Puntland means that Somaliland and Puntland are both equal autonomous regions of Somalia", no more than the lack of "in Kenya" might think they are equal autonomous regions of Kenya. If they are more familiar, they will already understand the meaning. If tehy are not, the Puntland article has information about what exactly Puntland is. CMD (talk) 12:07, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

While you do raise some good points, I support @Kzl55: compromise of just using the official name of Puntland per its constitution. Dabaqabad (talk) 12:22, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure which edit you refer to, but per WP:PLACE article contents should use the article title when referring to locations, absent a compelling historical name change context. CMD (talk) 14:58, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
