Title of Article.

I don't know how important this is, but absolutely no one outside the Wikipedia community uses the term "Reconstruction" to describe the recovery effort now taking place in New Orleans. The terms rebuilding or recovery are the most commonly used terms, so perhaps the most encyclopedic and accurate title would be Rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Also, note that other Gulf Coast communities have also been recovering from the 2005 Hurricane Season, and that New Orleans has recovered from multiple disasters in its three century history. There are many national and local organizations involved in this unprecedented rebuilding effort, nearly all of which have websites that could provide source material for an updated version of this article. winstonho0805 (talk) 20:33, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Fact

I removed the "fact" template added by an anon. For the record, the French Quarter bars were Johnny White's and Molly's in the Market, the latter remaining usually open and the former allegedly always open throughout the storm and aftermath. news.google or google will show a number of referenes, and at least one book of first hand accounts published recently mentiones these as well. -- Infrogmation 19:33, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Request clarification

In the section "Parts of town: differing circumstances" this phrase occurs: "built at a higher level from mid-20th century dredging." This is confusing; should it read "a higher level than", or does it mean that dredging was used to build up the land at that location?

The Lakefront neighborhoods were built on land that had been partially swamp and partially the shallows of Lake Pontchartrain; lake bottom mud was dredged in behind concrete floodwalls. The level of this land is at a higher elevation above sea level than the adjacent natural land just inland (or, indeed, any of the natural land between Gentilly & Metarie Ridges and the Lake). Times / dates mentioned in this article are not clear.

Article mentions many dates and timeframes that should be clarified.
Examples:
- Day/Month, but no year "By Tuesday, September 6, the Port of New Orleans, the biggest U.S. port in terms of tonnage handled, was able to receive and service relief ships." We can probably guess which year is intended but ideally the article should spell these out.
- Possibly dated references. " Camp Hope in Violet, LA has housed volunteers in the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort of St. Bernard Parish since June 1, 2006." It's now April 2008. They're still there? (Plus any other references of this type that may be outdated.)
- Generally odd tense. "Relief agencies have helped many returnees." Probably better now as "Relief agencies helped many returnees." "Habitat for Humanity has been active with volunteers gutting and repairing damaged houses and constructing new houses." Still?

Low-income housing and Homelessness

I am trying to add a viewpoint that is not heard on this page but which I have read a lot about: That the low-income housing market is being largely gutted in favor of a tabula rasa from which a new city that caters to significantly richer residents will rise, displacing a lot of former residents that had lived there for generations. I am also interested in writing about the record homeless population in NO. I am in the process of writing it, but if anyone can help, that would be excellent.

Developing a lead

After User:MakeBelieveMonster put in that there was no lead to this article, I reread it. There were other problems, to include updating the article with current dates. In order to develop a lead, I reorganized the sections, updated some verb tenses, improved some grammar, etc. I also added some citation needed tags where I thought more support was needed. I then wrote the lead. If anyone can improve on it, please do. I left in the dated template for that reason. Don'tKnowItAtAll (talk) 12:17, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
