Expert attention[edit]

This article is in need of expert attention from anyone knowledgeable about the taxonomy of sharks and rays. I believe the term pleurotremata is an outdated term used to differentiate sharks (pleurotremata) and rays (hypotremata). The term can be found in various places. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility[1] identifies pleurotremata (and eulaschii) as synonyms for selachimorpha, while the book Fish & Fisheries[2] provides an entirely different taxonomy for pleurotremata (although the reliability of this source is questionable). The UK National Biodiversity Network Gateway[3] lists pleurotremata but gives no information for it.

I'd ask someone with expertise in these matters to either complete this article, redirect it as appropriate, or nominate it for deletion if appropriate. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:30, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've redirected this to shark. There's a trickle of recent sources on Google Scholar that have Pleurotremata as a subdivision of Selachii (e.g. as an order in a class), but as far as I can tell, they intend their usage of Pleurotremata to be the taxon covered by the shark article. If there's any taxonomic disagreement, I think it takes place at a higher rank (i.e., whether Selach* should cover something between the shark article and the Elasmobranchii article). @Plantdrew: I'm not entirely comfortable with the redirect to shark as the term pleurotremata does not appear at that page. If nothing else, mention should probably be made at shark regarding this term in order to justify the redirect. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:08, 15 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've added Pleurotremata to the synonyms section of the taxobox in the shark article. Plantdrew (talk) 00:39, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Plantdrew: Thanks! Nicely handled! WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 11:40, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
