Death[edit]

Alan Truscott mentioned in his NYT bridge column 1988-11-20 "Pierre Jaïs and the late Roger Trézel" --30 years ago Europeans would have called them the "world's strongest partnership". Evidently Jaïs died later than mid-Novemmber. --P64 (talk) 20:15, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

NYTimes archive search 'Pierre Jaïs' (reverse chron order) hits 75 articles --36 from the Truscott years (2005 back to 1964); 35 from the Albert H. Morehead years (1965 back to the 1930s, but the 10 earliest are 1955/1956 correspondence by George Rapée); 4 false alarms prior to 1855

Unfortunately 70 of the 71 genuine hits predate 1981 and are available only to subscribers or by pay-per-view. The one in public archive is Truscott's 1986 obituary of Trézel, which is now [ref name=truscott1986] in the article.

The earliest reports from the 1955 Monte Carlo open team-of-four, not a world championships. "FRENCH GAIN LEAD IN WORLD BRIDGE; Place First in Early Rounds of Team-of-Four Match-- U. S. Group Is Tenth" (header and first par only), The New York Times, 23 March 1955, p. 29. (Simply "Special to the N.Y.T." but the three hits from later that week credit George Rapée.)

Thus the search feature for this public archive does not hit Truscott's 1988-11-20 column, cited above, nor any obituary of PJ, presumably later that year.

Parallel search Roger Trézel (reverse chron order) hits 48 articles --23 from the Truscott years; 25 from the Morehead (of wh the earliest 11 are 1955/1956 correspondence by Rapée); apparently all genuine

By subscription search of a photo archive (as I did 6 months ago, probably) I find four genuine NYTimes hits for Pierre Jaïs post 1980, which should be in the public archive. All by Truscott. One is the 1986 obituary of RT. The others:

"[Bridge:] Careless or Clever? Sometimes It's Hard to Tell", 19 Jan 2004, pE7

2004 features RT(W) & PJ(E) in a deal from the 1956 Bermuda Bowl in Paris, on the occasion of the tourney's return to Paris. 2001 features PJ as declarer "in France about four decades ago", no evident occasion. 1988 is the column I cited 6 months ago--above and in the biography Roger Trézel. --P64 (talk) 21:11, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
