Peter Lassen's Date of Birth[edit]

An IP editor changed Lassen's date of birth, so I thought I would look in to this. August 7, 1800 is reported by the Red Bluff Beacon in 1859,[1] the SF Chronicle in 1893[2] and Fairfield in 1916.[3]

The first report on newspapers.com that I found for October 31, 1800 is in a 1937 Oakland Tribune article[4] that refers to a book Peter Lassen of California edited by Vogel-Jorgensen and written in Danish. Because of the vagaries of how search works on newspapers.com, there could be other, earlier sources. In 1940, Swartzlow also uses the October 31, 1800 date.[5] October 31, 1800 is reported by Johnston(2012).[6] Johnston's bibliography refers to the Vogel-Jorgensen work in the bibliography.

My guess is that Vogel-Jorgensen and subsequent authors were able to look at church or other records that indicate the October 31, 1800 date. I think we should go with October 31, 1800 for Lassen's date of birth.Cxbrx (talk) 22:15, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
