Body found[edit]

Possibly some confusion here similar to the Joe Tasker page? Peter Boardman's body was found and identified in 1992 by Kazakhs (and apparently again in 1996) but (as is apparent from the photos in 'Chris Bonington's Everest'(2002)) this was in the area of the second Pinnacle, not the Second Step, which is an entirely different feature much further up the N/NE ridge and firmly on the standard north side climbing route. I have therefore changed this detail. I would also suggest that the statement under External Links, while correct, should simply be merged with the main article, otherwise it is a repetition.Summitscribbler 16:57, 5 May 2007

Internet photos of body wrongly claimed to be Peter Boardman[edit]

While looking for images of Peter Boardman that might be suitable for this article, I noticed photos of a dead mountaineer that some people have claimed, wrongly, is Boardman. The photo, of an unidentified climber, was taken by Neal Beidleman in 1996 and is reproduced with the correct copyright information on this website: http://chucknacke.com/everest04.html

Beidleman was a guide on Scott Fischer’s Mountain Madness team that climbed Everest via the South Col route. The photo appears on the back cover of some editions of Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air. (My copy is a hardcover 1997 UK edition published by Macmillan.) In some versions of the photo the image is reversed and includes the caption: "One in every four climbers who have attempted to climb Mount Everest have died”. This also appears to have been taken from Into Thin Air: "between 1921 and May 1996 144 people died and the peak was climbed some 630 times--a ratio of one in four. Last spring, 12 climbers died and 84 reached the summit--a ratio of one in seven." (p274)

I don’t know how this photo came to be wrongly assumed to be Boardman, but to reiterate:

  • Beidleman went nowhere near the NE ridge where Boardman’s body lies
  • Boardman wore a red one-piece Mountain Equipment down suit as shown in photos in Everest the Unclimbed Ridge. A similar suit worn by Boardman on Kangchenjunga is held by the Mountain Heritage Trust. (Description here: http://www.mountain-heritage.org/item.php?ID=773)
  • Neither the surrounding terrain, nor the position and appearance of the body in the photo match accounts published by those who have seen photos of Boardman's body, for instance Chris Bonington and Maria Coffey. Lacewing (talk) 07:48, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
