"Firm line" is colloquial as well as mysterious. I presume the writer means to say that Matane is a racist 203.184.55.172 (talk) 06:11, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Racist" is inflammatory and unfair language. "Firm line" means he is strongly against the establishment of businesses in PNG by citizens of other countries. Whether one agrees with him or not, it is reasonable for any country to wish to keep control of its economy. MarcusCole12 (talk) 23:15, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The paragraph was unsourced. As it was unclear, and potentially libellous and inflammatory, I've removed it altogether, per BLP. In addition, it was similar to content added repeatedly to the article on Michael Somare by an anonymous editor, who also used that article's talk page to rant about "expatriates" (particularly Australian-born) in Papua New Guinea. Consensus among established editors has been to revert such edits. (The anonymous editor has an IP based in Brisbane, and has consistently made unsourced edits designed to make Somare, PNG's Prime Minister, look foolish. Apparently he's doing the same to Matane.) Finally, Matane is Governor-General; his function is to be above politics, as representative of the Queen. He is unlikely, and constitutionally unable, to take a "firm line" on any political issue.
