Town or village[edit]

Is Parkestown a town or village? It looks very small to be a village unless it is very densly populated and there is no population data to give an indication. Ksbrowntalk 16:11, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parkeston is a village. It is not suburb, it is in fact part of the Parish of Ramsey. Bob300w (talk) 20:14, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I do apologise Bob, nobody had answered the question so I put forward what I thought was right from living in Harwich in the past. You seem to know the answer so I have removed my previous input M J Duly 08:41, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Apologies, Bob and Michael, if this seems mistaken, but I've simply taken the designation out, leaving "port". I was brought up in Dovercourt and recently visited the area. Parkeston might perhaps be officially a "village", but it doesn't look like one - there is really not much in Parkeston but the port, plus an oil refinery! One might term it a "suburb" of Harwich, but then one might have to do the same with Dovercourt - which would be unpopular at least in Dovercourt, which has its own long history. Yet the whole area seems too small overall to talk about "suburbs". Consistently, I've removed the categorisation "Villages in Essex". --Wikiain (talk) 04:42, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

General[edit]

Assorted changes, hopefully for the good:

  • I changed "Ray Island" to "Ray Farm", which is in the article Harwich International Port. That seemed more plausible, but then I found in the article "Harwich" a chart (which I have now added) that shows a "Ray Isle", so I reverted the change. There doesn't seem to be any mystery, only a Ray Farm on Ray Island after reclamation. Ray Farm is referred to in "The Mayflower Line History", which I have added. I've now settled for "In the 1880s, reclaimed land that had been Ray Island was developed".
  • I've capitalised "The Hangings", which I'm sure is right. There may be an old embankment there, but it is well overgrown and I think the name refers to all of the undeveloped area south of the present railway and stretching east-west from Station Lane to the roundabout with a green cross in it (Google Earth).
  • And I've taken out "After a launch in London" from the reference to 1978 and the MV Dana Anglia. As the link I've inserted shows, the ship was built in Denmark. Whatever may have happened in London, it could not have been a launch (a lunch, perhaps?). And, so far as I know, shipbuilding in London ceased long ago.
  • The historical note for 1953 on the Kronprins Frederik was added from memory - the link given is the only one I could find, but it seems well researched and I remember seeing the wreck on its side.
  • "1999: On 29 August three cruise ships berthed here simultaneously." Should this stay in, if the three ships are not named? I can't find that info.
  • The article has come a long way in the last few years, but is now extensively "trivial". Could someone with sources integrate the historical list?
With fond memories of playing in The Hangings in the 1950s, when the area was excitingly wild. --Wikiain (talk) 04:42, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
