Copyright violation?[edit]

@AtticusThePoet: I'm worried about a copyright violation introduced recently. As best I can tell, The Victoria History of the County of Durham: Volume III was published in 1928 in the United Kingdom (assuming that [1] is the earliest publication). According to this guide for the UK, the copyright expired in 2009 in the UK (assuming the death date at William Page (historian) is correct). Thus, according to this guide for the US (specifically, the section "Works First Published Outside the U.S.... > Works Published Abroad Before 1978 > Solely published abroad..."), the copyright will not expire in the US until next year.

Of course, it's totally possible that 1) an earlier printing exists and I just couldn't find it, and/or 2) it was published in the US less than 30 days after it was published in the UK, in which case AFAICT different rules apply. However, in lieu of concrete evidence that this is the case, I've temporarily hidden the text in question. BalinKingOfMoria (talk) 00:52, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, OK I'm not sure. So I have done a quick revision giving just the first mention of the village and referencing William Page.

It seems the work may have first been published in 1905

I have now created a rewrite[edit]

I have looked at the potential copywrite violation. I cannot verify if the original work was published in 1905 so will stick with the 1928 online digitised edition which means US copywrite will still apply until 2023.

As such I had rewritten the article and omitted the section that would have violated copywrite rules. I have made a brief mention to the first mention of the village and referenced Page's 1928 published work.

Hope this resolves the issue
