Scottish/Australasian Writer

James Davis should not be confused with the Scottish-born writer who lived in Australia and New Zealand called Hugh H. Lusk (1838–1926), who also used the pseudonym Owen Hall. Here is a bio of him. He may also be the same person as Hugh Lusk. -- Ssilvers (talk) 06:49, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Wife and children

Someone stated in an edit summary, but did not give a reference, that Hall married Esther Josephine da Coasta Andrade in London, and that the couple had a son Hyman, in the army, and two daughters, Isabel who married the son of Mr Benjamin, twice lord-mayor of Melbourne, and Dorothy, who is now referenced in the article. Can anyone find references? I understand that the information might be in the article The Frankaus of London: A Study in Radical Assimilation, published in the journal Jewish History. -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:35, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Well, their marriage (indexed both as Esther Josephine Da C Andrade and Esther J Da Costa-andrade, to plain James Davis) is recorded in the quarterly marriage index Q4 1876 in Marylebone, W London (on Ancestry) Likewise Isabelle Davis' birth was registered in Marylebone the last quarter of 1877. That of Hyman Andrade Davis at Eastbourne in the last quarter of 1878 and that of Dorothy in Marylebone in the first quarter of 1880. Hyman married Helen Elizabeth Davis (so she didn't change surname on marriage) in the second quarter of 1914. He died, according to his probate, 6 Jan 1950 at Westminster, London. Corrected a quick typo on the 'Da Costa Andrade' surname - hope you didn't mind! Looking balanced now in that section!

And a final twist for his probate in a newspaper (Belfast News-Letter - Monday 29 April 1907 p8 c5) - his poor wife!

“OWEN HALL'S” ESTATE. Mr. James Davis, LL.B., who died intestate on the 10th April last at Harrogate, aged 53 years, son of Mr. Hyman Davis, left estate valued for probate at £2OO gross, with net personality nil, and his wife, Mrs. Esther Davis (daughter of the late Mr. Joseph Andrade), having renounced letters of administration, letters have been granted to his son, Mr. Hyman Andrade Davis, 6E, Montague Mansions, as one of the next-of-kin. The late Mr. Davis, who was better known as "Owen Hall” and "Stalled Ox," of the “Sporting Times," was the author of "Florodora," the “Geisha," the "Girl from Kay’s," a "Gaiety Girl," the "Greek Slave," and other popular musical comedies. For some time he practised as a solicitor, and contested Dundalk in the Conservative interest against the Lord Chief Justice (Charles Russell). For two years be was editor of the "Bat" and contributor to “Truth," the "World," and many other papers. More recently he attempted to float "Owen Hall Ltd" with ths avowed object of checking musical comedy from degeneration.
