Youth[edit]

The above is cited without any references and The Ukrainian Weekly newspaper mentions an Orest Banach on numerous occasions and despite perhaps being German-born (reference please), he was closely linked with the Ukrainian soccer community in the 1960s. This strongly suggests that he was not Hungarian or German but in fact Ukrainian. It is unknown if he is the son of Omelian Banach who won the 1952-53 National Soccer League title with the New York Ukrainian Sports Club (USC).[1] Omelian is listed in the team and shown in a photo "with his son, Orest" who appears to be the age that Orest would have been in 1953. If true, then Orest would have spent at least some time in the NYC area before his family moved to the Chicago area. Another reference to an Orest Banach as a goalkeeper for the NY USC team at age 18 suggests that Orest did not in fact grow up in Illinois but only moved west later.[2] The first reference to an Orest Banach in Chicago is not in fact until December of 1966 when he was selected as an alternate for the US Olympic team[3] He later played for the US in a loss to Haiti in World Cup Qualifying[4]. Is this one and the same young man?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mohrflies (talkcontribs)
