Merge[edit]

Since the song itself was never actually a single and may only really meet one criteria at Wikipedia:Notability (songs) of being a "the signature song of a performer," though that can be said about a lot of GD songs that weren't singles. With other "non-notable" songs I have worked with in the past, most usually are either merged into the first album it appeared on and then the original page is redirected. -- MOE.RON talk | done | doing 20:46, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't care about this article one way or the other, but I hope you realize that Wikipedia:Notability (songs) has long since been overtaken by events. Every Mariah Carey single has its own article, even the duds. Every Beatles song period has its own article, even the obscurest, least important, even the ones McCartney doesn't remember writing or recording. All sorts of songs have articles, and it's going to get more that way, not less. Such is the nature of WP. Wasted Time R 20:55, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am suprised at that and did not know; I would think people would have started to notice and do something. I have made Wikipedia:proposed deletions and WP:AFDs before on songs of limited notability and have had fair and conscious discussions, some ending with deletion, some with mergers, some with no change.
The reason I am bringing this up is because this may the next area of GD I might focuse on here at Wikipedia once I get the compilation/box set articles finished, even though I have been busy in RL recently. I have even considered creating a GD Wikiproject, but I already created a Jam bands one and have trouble keeping up with that =| Plus, before I would do that, I would like to go through the main Grateful Dead article and work on that. *sigh* When I can get time, haha -- MOE.RON talk | done | doing 21:01, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Based on Wikipedia:Notability (songs), what Dead songs do you think would qualify for articles? It's possible only three do: "Dark Star" (helped define a genre), "Touch of Grey" (major visible top 10 hit), and "Truckin'" (signature song, minor hit, persistent airplay) (which oddly doesn't have one yet). Except for "Touch of Grey", none of these meets the WP:Song guideline for notability based on charts ranking. On what grounds do you include them? And focusing on the singles that the Dead released is more than a bit bizarre, since they were the ultimate non-singles-oriented band. Also, be advised there is a song (not single) infobox form available, so you don't have to organize song articles as singles. See Stairway to Heaven, Thunder Road (song), Comfortably Numb, A Day in the Life for some famous examples. Wasted Time R 21:41, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Dark Star" was released as a single, so that is why I organized it as such. I really don't see what the problem is. I have been collecting these singles for years now. I almost have a full collection.
There is a singles template at Wikipedia:WikiProject Songs here Template:Infobox Single. I am going to use that, since I don't plan on creating articles for songs for each album, like the examples you give. These were album releases, and even though they are singles, they are encyclopedic. There production and sales are documented, with a number of them charting. If you think that any of the songs/single albums I create shouldn't be on Wikipedia, feel free to nominate them for deletion.

There's no guideline in Wikipedia that says that every single ever released needs an article. You can't possibly believe that, say, "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away" or "Passenger" or "Foolish Heart" are more notable than "One More Saturday Night", can you? You may be a collector, but you seem to have very little feel for what the Grateful Dead were all about. Nevertheless, I've already spent more time discussing this than is warranted. I'm not a Dead Head (although I've known a few), I don't even like Dead music that much outside of some of the Live/Dead through Europe '72 span, I don't know why I'm spending all this time on these Dead articles, such are the mysteries of the WP habit! You are right, there is no guideline for singles, so I will include what is encyclopedic and well noted, especially songs that other musicians also have played (like Stealin'). It's not a matter of if one song is more "popular" to us Deadheads, just that I am helping chronicle actual releases. Some of this does go against my Deadheadishness, since OMSN was a big song. I would LOVE to include Playin' as an article here on Wikipedia, but I won't (as of now), because it isn't a single, even though I believe that song was a HUGE definition of what the band is to me and other fans.

If all you want to do is chronicle singles releases, which is indeed worthy, just make a list or table of them in the GD discography article, with release dates and chart positions. There's no reason to create individual articles for the singles unless they were big hits or otherwise of importance. Look at The Rolling Stones discography for example, it does a nice job giving information about the singles, but at least half of them don't have individual articles, and almost all of them were far more successful than the Dead's singles. Some merge!!![edit]

"MoeRON the fascist"s idea of "merge" is a euphemism for "delete"! He just redirects the song page to the album page without including any contents! He is a fraud, why can't a sysop do something about him?? I have brought this page back to life. Others can expand upon it. As MoeRON the fascist even admits, One More Sat Night was "a big song". I have added that a movie and a radio show were both named after it. How many other songs can say that? That is "notability" above what some silly guidelines that no one reads anyway say. If wiki is going to have song pages, this should be one of them!

  2. Nevertheless, the anon is right. Moeron didn't merge-and-redirect the song articles, he obliterated-and-redirected them. That's not right.
  3. I now agree with the anon that One More Saturday Night (song) deserves to be its own article, as the song has had a significant influence. Playing in the Band should be too and always has been, Moeron didn't change that. The other song articles' content can be included in the album article and then redirected.
