Observance[edit]

Oak Apple Day is still occasionally observed in Britain - and the Commonwealth. The fact it is no longer a public holiday is irrelevant. The statement that "Though the holiday, Oak Apple Day, was formally abolished in 1859, a 1915 film clip of Colonel Lyttleton inspecting the Chelsea pensioners on Oak Apple Day is preserved at the British Film Institute" is a non sequitur. A film of a Oak Apple Day parade has nothing to do with public holidays. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.197.15.138 (talk) 05:41, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm 59 and have lived in England all my life, and I'd never heard of this festival before finding it here. Celebrations must be very, very localised. The article currently gives the impression that this is some sort of major national event like Guy Fawkes Night, which it certainly isn't. --Ef80 (talk) 16:00, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm a similar age and British and I've always known about Oak Apple Day. In fact as I recall it used to be listed on calendars and in diaries until quite recent times. Certainly taught about it at school. Think the above commentator has just led a sheltered life! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.108.112.124 (talk) 08:32, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I also knew about this day. At primary school we learned a song about it. It began "Oak tree, oak tree on a summer's day when birds do sing in May..." and ends " with a ribbon blue we will bind your spray on the 29th of May". The ensuing 70 years have left gaps but if anyone can point to the full lyrics they should perhaps be included in this article. 79.73.107.49 (talk) 08:20, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
