Dab page for "northern" subdivisions[edit]

originally from User_talk:Tobias Conradi and User_talk:Golbez. Initiated by Golbez. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 05:05, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have an idea. You noticed I moved some of Cameroon's provinces to a non-disambiguated article, i.e. South Province, Cameroon, because there were no other south provinces. Someone dropped me a note on this point, and you reverted me. Probably rightly so. So here's my idea:

Have a single disambiguation page for each cardinal direction.

Why? Because:

  1. Some are simple matters of translation (Is this properly "South Province" or "Southern Province"?)
  2. Similarly, is it Southern Province or Southern Department?

So, isntead of having separate disambig pages for "Northern Region", "Northern Province", etc, I propose we combine them all. I've gone through all the countries and made a list of all of these, but I wanted to run it by you first, and I had a question - what do we call this? My first thought was "North (subdivision)" or "North (region)" or something. Another thing: "Northern Region", et.al. should redirect to this page. It can be split up by regions, provinces, etc., but again, since that can be confused by translation, we probably shouldn't depend on a disambig page for each single kind. It would look something like:

North or Northern are the names of some subnational divisions around the world:

  • Nord Region, Burkina Faso
  • Northern Governorate, Bahrain
  • Al Mintaqah al Shamaliya (Northern) Municipality, Bahrain
  • Extreme-Nord Province, Cameroon
  • Nord Province, Cameroon
  • Northern Territoriy, Australia
  • Northern Division, Fiji
  • Northern Region, Ghana
  • Nord Department, Haiti
  • North District, Israel
  • North Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan
  • Northern Region, Malawi
  • North Lebanon, Lebanon
  • Northern Areas, Pakistan
  • North Province, Rwanda
  • Northern Province, Sierra Leone
  • Northern State, Sudan
  • Northern Thailand, Thailand
  • Northern Province, Zambia

This is a draft of course, not ordered or prettied or anything, just taken from my notes, but I wanted to run it by you. Thoughts? And what should it be named? And if this is done, it would probably make sense to always disambiguate (i.e. "Southern Province (Cameroon)", even if there is no other Southern Province, simply because - again - of the aforementioned translation issues), except in unique or well-known cases, like, of course, Northern Territory. --Golbez 01:19, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see you leave in North Carolina :-). I would prefer not to put all in one list. But let's start with linking all dab lists together and maybe mention the local. Ambigous translations maybe can be mentioned on two or more pages. E.g. if Iraq would have a North wilaya this could be N.Governorate or N.Province. Let's start with linking all Northes together? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 04:29, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like that, because then you still have to go through a half dozen pages to find all of them, and you could be searching for the wrong type anyway. Maybe I should pop up a proof-of-concept of this and see how it works. --Golbez 04:31, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point. Is it really that much you have to go through? BTW i would like to use a template. for linking all together. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 04:33, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Or, how about this: A singular North page that links to North(ern) Region, North(ern) Province, etc. I don't think they should link to each other like a web, we need a central page to link to them from. It would also have the individual ones, like North Lebanon. Thoughts? --Golbez 04:34, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like using a template because these are disambiguation pages, nothing more. There is nothing that links all the Northern Regions with all the Northern Provinces, etc., except a similarity of naming and a general geographic tilt. We shouldn't imply such. I don't know of any disambiguation pages with such a template. --Golbez 04:36, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Let's make it article if this is necessary :-). the dabs stay where they are and the See-also-section only gets a link to the "North (subdivison/region)" article. If someone looks for "North District" he should be better not thrown into the N-territories, -regions, -states etc. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 05:10, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see why not. What's wrong with it? Let me try it out, but not here. What would be a good name for a singular North disambig page? "Northern (subnational division)"? --Golbez 05:16, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List (North subdivisions)[edit]

  • Northern Territory / Northern Territories
  • Northern Region
  • Northern District
  • Northern Province
  • Northern State
  • Nord Region, Burkina Faso
  • Northern Governorate, Bahrain
  • Al Mintaqah al Shamaliya (Northern) Municipality, Bahrain (mintaqah in general is region sometimes province. see Ash-Shamaliyah - the northern)
  • Extreme-Nord Province, Cameroon
  • Nord Province, Cameroon
  • Northern Territoriy, Australia
  • Northern Division, Fiji
  • Northern Region, Ghana
  • Nord Department, Haiti
  • North District, Israel
  • North Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan
  • Northern Region, Malawi
  • North Lebanon, Lebanon
  • Northern Areas, Pakistan
  • North Province, Rwanda
  • Northern Province, Sierra Leone
  • Northern State, Sudan
  • Northern Thailand, Thailand
  • Northern Province, Zambia

Implementation[edit]

OK, Tobias, I've tried it out - see Northern (subnational entity) to see what I did. I kinda hate the name, there's no "Northern (disambiguation)" but I want this list to be solely for subnat entitites. --Golbez 07:07, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and did it for all of the cardinal directions, and if I say so myself, I like how it turned out. --Golbez 07:55, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I like it too!!! Yes the name is stupid. May someone else improve this. - best regards Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:06, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
