Value[edit]

What is the value of a nightrider? It seems to be worth about as much as a rook, and is treated that way in pocket mutation chess, but has much greater ability to fork pieces than the rook does, being able to move in 8 different directions like the queen. On the other hand, a lone nightrider and a king cannot force checkmate on a bare king (or at least pages on chessvariants.org say so), because the nightrider cannot form a barrier that the king cannot pass as the queen and rook can. Notation[edit]

The notation in the first puzzle listed is clearly inaccurate. The first move for white is Ne7 for knight to square e7, however only the nightrider rather than the knight can reach e7, shouldn't this be Se7 (later it is referred to by an S). The next move for is listed as Ng3, however neither the knight nor the nightrider should be able to reach g3, perhaps they meant g6?? There seem to be further inaccuracies confusing board positioning and piece placement.. (75.90.49.111 (talk) 21:35, 10 June 2017 (UTC))[reply]

No, N = nightrider, S = knight. (From the lede: In this article the nightrider is represented with an inverted knight, and notation N (in which case the knight is abbreviated as S for German Springer).) And a nightrider on e7 *can* move to g3. And where is a nightrider "later referred to by an S"? And what are specific "inaccuracies confusing board positioning and piece placement"? --IHTS (talk) 07:59, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification Needed[edit]

Article says, "The nightrider moves any number of steps as a knight in the same direction. Intervening squares must be vacant." Don't you mean to say, "The nightrider moves any number of steps as a knight in the same direction. Intervening landing squares must be vacant. Does not the nightrider retain the ability of the knight to jump intervening occupied squares? It is not the intervening squares which must be vacant, but the landing squares for each of the chain of jumps? (PeacePeace (talk) 23:47, 29 December 2019 (UTC))[reply]
