One missing factoid[edit]

I think one thing that should be added (if known) is why the main character is apparently named after Chinese broccoli. And if that is indeed the case, when we could expect a Diego-like spinoff who will be named Bok choy. Ham Pastrami (talk) 18:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The flaw in your logic is that Chinese dialect used in the show is Mandarin (not Cantonese); thus, jie lan would be the Romanization of 芥蘭 as pronounced in Mandarin. -- Robocoder (t|c) 06:33, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bias[edit]

Okay, i know this is very biased, so i am putting it here not the article. But the show actually gets words wrong. I am in Chinese Two, and have learned green to be "lü" pronounced exactly like its german counterpart, the show says it is "lu" like Waterloo.

And yes, i know it is a kid show, and they cant pronounce it, but many sites put IPA /y/ as closer to bee than boo...

Kind of like how all sorts of Disney and Hollywood crap is American propaganda trying to brainwash youths in other countries to accept American hegemony right? Or how Dora the Explorer is about promoting illegal immigration from Mexico I suppose? (rollseyes).
They should handle ü properly.

Ye Ye (Mandarin word for "paternal grandfather") is Kai-lan's grandfather and legal guardian. He was born in Hong Kong and lovingly passes on his exciting traditions to his granddaughter. He provides Kai-lan with gentle guidance, leading her to find her own answers, at her own pace. (Kai-lan's parents and other grandparents are not known.) He can play the tuba. He also enjoys picking apples and making dumplings for Kai-lan and all her animal friends. He's known to pop out of places unexpectedly, but the gang just gets used to it after awhile. Next Is Kai-Lan Kai-Lan is the main character of a 7-year-old playful, adventurous second grader with a big heart. She speaks both English and Mandarin Chinese, and she is eager to share her language, her culture, and her playtime with her animal friends and the viewers at home. Kai-Lan is a natural leader but she is also thoughtful and caring with a gift for helping her friends when they really need her. Her favorite animal is a dinosaur and in her music group, she plays her tambourine. Her last name should be Chow as opposed to Chou on the wikipedia page. it has stated on the chinese wikipedia article of 你好凱蘭 that her last name in english spelled is Chow. Controversial topics[edit]

In general me (and my kids) like the show. However, last week I saw one episode in which they told kids that if someone made something nice, it was OK to copy it. I saw this as a direct reference to the Chinese way of totally ignoring international copyright laws and copying just about any product. I don't want my kids to be indoctrinated like that. This has got to be the most idiotic thing I have read. I don't know which episode is being referred to but talking about copyright violations regarding kids copying another kid's arts and crafts work in a kid's show is just being silly. Also the show is produced by a (Chinese) American in the U.S. and not from China.

He's talking about the Everybody's Hat parade episode. Also, you can't copy EVERYTHING. Hats, yes. Outfits, yes. Most other things? No. Sometimes it's ILLEGAL to copy things... like movies. That would be called piracy and you will get in big trouble. So it's not controversial at all really. The outfits thing? Another example. Anyway... Don't judge anything by what you perceive. Mardarian?[edit]

It says Kai-Lan is voiced by Falin Noei, a "Mardarian." What's a Mardarian? I cannot find anything about Mardarians on Wikipedia, and Google assumes I misspelled Mandarin. Is this just a typo? Meaning of Ni Hao[edit]

Before I visited China, I learned that "ni hao?" means "How are you?", literally "You good?"

Anime influenced animation on the show[edit]

According to the NY Times, Karen Chau collected bootleg tapes of Japanese anime dubbed in Chinese. She also was mad (very enthusiastic) for Hello Kitty, whose graphic style has rubbed off on the “Ni Hao” characters.
