Copy paste plagiarism[edit]

I find it very disturbing that so much of this article is copied straight from Baughman's book without enclosing it in quote marks, as if it were the editors' words rather than the Baughman's. It is a very serious infraction and violation of Wikipedia policy. This kind of plagiarism is grounds for expulsion at higher educational institutions the West.

For any text that is copied, acknowledging that it is based on a book is a good first step but a PD tag on the book citation is not enough. Text that is a direct copy (direct speech) from the book must be in quotes and should have page numbers in the citation so it can be verified.

But even if it's got quote marks, there is no excuse for copying large amounts of text wholesale into an article and the amount of copying evident here is extreme. We need to restate the content in our own words (and it would be great to have more than one source) and until we do that the copy paste tag should remain at the top of the article to alert readers that they are not reading an article that meets Wikipedia standards and policy Joja lozzo 17:39, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to Wikipedia's consensus, it is enough; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism and specifically Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Public-domain_sources, which offers three means of attributing PD text pastes:

Put the whole text (if small enough) in blockquotes or quotation marks.

For sections or whole articles, add an attribution template; if the text taken does not form the entire article, specifically mention the section requiring attribution.

In a way unambiguously indicating exactly what has been copied verbatim, provide an inline citation and/or add your own note in the reference section of the article.

This article fully complies now with that guideline, since Sphilbrick's edit. If you think that this practice should be deprecated, please seek consensus for that change at WT:Plagiarism. In the meantime, please do not replace the tag on this article, as it will list it repeatedly for administrator review for copyright issues that do not exist. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 12:11, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
