Date of death[edit]

Looking at various online sources, several state his date of death as April 15, 1989, while others state July 15. Which is correct? Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:22, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of name[edit]

Some Turkish sources seem to give his name as Nasuhi, rather than Nesuhi. If that's the correct original spelling - I don't know - it should be mentioned in the article. But, the critical point so far as this article is concerned is that his name in English language sources was spelled Nesuhi - random reliable sources here, here, here, etc. - and that should be the dominant spelling in this article. Why? Why should Turks have to accept that Americans impose their preference on their own names? Did they ask for permission from his parents to change the name? --Why should I have a User Name? (talk) 17:16, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, please provide some evidence that what you say is true. I see alternate names in Turkish sources. Secondly, what is important, per WP:COMMONNAME, is the spelling that was used in the areas in which he was most notable. Unless you can demonstrate differently, I believe that he was most notable for his contributions to the American record industry. American sites, including the Atlantic Records site - the site of the company he his brother co-founded - always use the spelling with the e. Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:38, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And what about the surname? (This does not mean I agree on anything else.) --Why should I have a User Name? (talk) 17:44, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't personally have a strong view on the surname, though I know that diacritics have been the subject of much dispute, and I'll abide by the consensus view. Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:47, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PS: More sources: Biography of Ahmet, 1955 Billboard article, another obituary, R&R Hall of Fame. Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:04, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PPS: Article by his friend Nat Hentoff, showing cover of Hommage à Nesuhi album, Charles Mingus album sleeve on Atlantic, with reference to Nesuhi Ertegun. Pretty conclusive, I think. Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:15, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"impose their preference" Spelling of names varies, especially across different languages. Some of it is unavoidable, like the lack of umlauts in English. Some is just normal variation, which can happen even inside a single language, e. g. Neal and Neil. Wikipedia article titles are chosen not because they are "official" or "correct" or preferred by the subject: "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎Paradoctor (talkcontribs) 16:11, 2 August 2014
