Translation choices[edit]

Why certain words or phrases got translated the way they did.

Title[edit]

I considered several possible titles in English, as well as keeping the original French for the title, but ended up going with "National Office for Veterans and Victims of War", because that's what can be found on English versions of official or semi-official French sites like onac-vg.fr, or this article from the French consulate in Boston. Whenever official French websites have an English page on their website, this is what they call it. Mathglot (talk) 07:45, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ward of the Nation[edit]

This is the translation chosen for Pupille de la Nation. The choice of wording is from English sources, such as the Imperial War Museum, and IBT. This is not the same as "ward of the state" in France; the distinction between the two is given in the footnote. Mathglot (talk) 17:28, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Logo image[edit]

I would like to use the logo image present at fr:File:Onac-logo_copier.jpg. This file is copyrighted. The logo page gives rights and reuse conditions; it specifically calls it out as not okay for Commons, but okay for France, US and Canada, without saying anything about other English-speaking countries, so it's not clear to me if it's okay to use it. (It also doesn't say anything about using it in other French-speaking countries, but the logo is used on this French page.) Can we use this logo at en-wiki, on the page about the organisation whose logo it is based on US fair use and the Canada permissions? Mathglot (talk) 19:07, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    • For the use you suggest, in the infobox of its own article, on the enwiki, it is a non-free image and must have a completed non-free logo rationale and must comply with the non-free policy requirements, which an infobox use would do. This logo can only be used on languages that allow non-free images under certain conditions as enwiki does. ww2censor (talk) 10:10, 9 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
