Organization[edit]

The composition of this article is noteworthy, in my view. I'm persuaded that the organization of this high quality article suggests a plausible template/guide for creating articles about other research institutes and scientific laboratories in Japan. --Tenmei (talk) 13:19, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for creating National Institute for Materials Science and for adding the illustrative link to NIMS at Independent Administrative Institutions.

As you may know, NIMS was already included in amongst those organizations identified at List of Independent Administrative Institutions (Japan). Your contribution caused the color to change from red to blue -- from a color which indicates that an article is needed to a color which shows that work on an article has commenced. I wonder if this is an appropriate time to invite you to do whatever you feel willing to do in improving the usefulness of this list and the introductory sentences which introduces the list?

I also have a very simple question -- so simple I suppose I should be embarrassed to ask it, but I frankly don't know the answer. What is the difference between a "research institute" and a "laboratory"? The "See also" section of Independent Administrative Institutions suggests investigating further by scanning List of National Laboratories (Japan), which includes a number of research institutes.

This leads me to believe that the unremarkable English term "laboratory" has taken on a specific meaning in this unique Japanese context -- that "national laboratories" only include those IAIs which are somehow related to the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in ways that NIMS is not?

Whether or not I've guessed correctly, it seems to me that the quality of the article about NIMS might be enhanced by a mere sentence or two in each of the following articles which help establish a context for NIMS in Japan and in this Wikipedia venue:
